whomper
So yesterday im working at a fabric show at the convention center in NY we do every year and this woman comes in. I spend about 20 minutes with her taking her through our line..She gathers up some fabric that she wants to sample and we sit down to write up the order. Now at these fabric shows we dont know most of these people so what we do is attach their business cards to the sample orders so we can enter all of their information into our system. So this woman pulls out a lining sample from another vendor and she pricks her finger on a staple and bleeds a little bit. She was reaching for her card to give it to me so I could attach it to the order. So she still reaches for the card after realizing she was bleeding and tries to hand me a card with smeared blood on it. I didnt extend my hand to get it and looked at her like she was crazy..Dont get me wrong it wasnt gushing but IMO one drop is one drop too many. So she looked at me as if to say what is your problem and I told her I wanted a different card. I was shocked at how obnoxious she became. She started huffing and puffing that I was overreacting and I calmly said that there was no way im accepting a card on it with blood on it..Not only for my safety but the people in my office that have to handle this card as well. I told her to keep it and that I will just manually write all of her information instead of getting a new card. The whole time I was very calm and she was all heated. She said I embarressed her and I said she was the one that made a big deal about it and got loud and I just quitly asked for a new card,. Long story short I wasted 20 minutes with her because she walked out without taking any samples in a huff. My boss totally agreed with me. Do you think I overreacted ? driveby
Hindsight being 20/20........ I might have taken the card without touching it and when she left copied down her information and trashed the card. But I totally understand your concern. detlef
Honestly, I'm not completely sure that I would have refused the card, but I would completely understand it if someone refused one of mine in such a situation. Frankly, had I been in her shoes, I would have been mortified at the realization that I'd handed someone a bloody card and demanded it back so that I could exchange it for another. I mean, I feel lame if I hand someone a card that's even dogeared. I'd have to say stained with bodily fluids ranks worse than that.
twiley
No way would I have accepted that business card and IMO you did the right thing. You should have told her, "Well, if you're into exchanging body fluids, how about a BJ then?" Edited September 27, 2006 by twiley
Dr. Sacrebleu
It's not often that a decorative painter like myself gets to laugh at the gheyness of someone elses job, but fabric sampling at a convention center is only slightly less ghey than uhm.... than hmmm. I suppose fluffing for hardcore ghey ron MIGHT be gheyer and I mean that winking graemlin the most hetero way possible But to answer your question, I would have taken the card, as I don't think there were any health concerns short of you planning on licking the card. Her reaction is obviously out of line.

But who can blame you for not thinking on that level at the time. Blood. ewwww.

Cunning Linguist
I wouldn't have taken it either, not in this day and age. You should have peed on one of yours and see if she would have taken it.

Brewer
You could have pretended that you were hasidic and asked her to just set the card on the table.

Chargerz
If anyone should have bloody business cards, it should be me, but there is NO WAY I would give one to a patient. In this day and age, with all the serious blood-borne diseases that can be passed, it is very inadvisable to give anything with blood on it to someone. In short, you did the right thing!!! wiegie
I would have taken the card and said "thank you, this will save us the time and effort of having to collect your DNA at a later date"
Coffeeman
I would've casually asked her if she had another 'clean' card to give me. Should only be an issue if she's truly out of them. If it was her last one, I'd ask her to place it on the table and then copy down the info later, as someone else already suggested...

godtomsatan
I wouldn't have offered the card if I bled on it. Unless it was the blood of a yearling calf at the altar of Zolthar the Unpenetrable. Otherwise, she's the rude one.
