PGA scoring

So today the local talking heads were laughing at the expense of the PGA by saying it is lame that the PGA claims Tiger's win streak is intact because neither the World Match Play or Ryder Cup are PGA events. Honestly, I couldn't care less and agree that win streaks typically do not include getting your ass handed to you back to back in the middle of them.

Then they expounded and brought up, once again, the whole "Tiger Slam" thing mentioning that anyone who thought of winning all majors in a row even if it took place over two years counts as a Grand Slam is foolish.

That got me thinking. How does the PGA keep track of the overall rankings? Do they reset in January or are they perpetual? If some nobody plays amazingly in the first tourney of the calendar year and wins it, does he become the #1 player in the world? My guess is no, but I'm not sure. Assuming that is not the case, does the season ever actually end? Thus, isn't it rather arbitrary to insist that you've got to win 4 in a row starting with the Masters rather than one of the others?

Of course, the irony is that win streaks are often counted as current even in sports that totally reset every season. Why then would anyone think of the "Tiger Slam" as somehow less than winning the four majors in the same calendar year. Why did anyone bother to make even a small stink when that dude Rollins from the Phillies carried a batting streak over from last year.

I know it's completely out of date and unimportant (which makes only less relevant than most things posted here on at most one of those counts), but I was curious on thoughts.
