is it just me, or does he actually look better than tomlinson at times? in mop up time, everybody knows he is running, and he still produces. is this because opposing defenses are so worn down late in the game? he looks like he could be scary good if given the load. sincerely, michael turner fantasy owner.

I am trying very hard to pry him away from another owner and make him my keeper next season. Is he not a free agent at the end of this season?

I don't know. I have them both and I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Last night he was getting the ball in some non-garbage time situations, and looked great. And him and LT were in the backfield at the same time a lot - I don't know if they ever did that before.

Yet another RBBC?!?

In 3 leagues, last year, drafted LJ in all, no Holmes. All about the 5th round. This year took MT, in all 3, no LT, but very late. He is LJ w/o the opportunity. One league is a keeper so would love to see him as a starter, anywhere, because he is impressive.

they are different kinds of rb. LT is obviously more shifty and has better hands. plus, he can throw. MT is more of a downhill, tackle-breaking pounder. I think there were 2-3 critical 3rd downs last night late in the game when he was used to just grind out a couple of yards for valuable 1st downs.

A big part of Turner's success is that he is generally running a lot in the second half of the game, when the opposing DEF is getting tired.

This guy is not just a pounder.Remember last year in Indy when he came in and played for a dinged up LT.He had like and 80 yard TD run.He is not called the "Burner"for nothing.

Here's an article in today's Union-Tribune that you might find interesting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUDDENLY THIS IS A TWO-RUNNING BACK TOWN

By Jay Posner

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

October 9, 2006

The Chargers promised all summer they would play LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner in the same backfield, but they used that alignment only sporadically in the season's first three games.

The Chargers' running backs really took flight when LaDainian Tomlinson, shown here gaining 19 yards on a pass reception in the fourth quarter, and teammate Michael Turner were on the field at the same time in last night's victory.

That all changed in last night's second half . . . and so did the Chargers' ability to run the ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the first half of the Chargers' 23-13 victory at Qualcomm Stadium, Tomlinson carried seven times and gained 9 yards. As a team, the Chargers had eight carries for eight yards.

But in the second half, with Tomlinson and Turner often on the field at the same time, the Chargers rushed 23 times for 111 yards. The dual running back package wasn't the sole reason for the success, but it sure helped.

“It forces teams to make a choice,” said Tomlinson, who lined up as a slotback or wide receiver when Turner was in the backfield. “If they put a linebacker on me, then I can get the ball in the flat with some space. If they don't, if they walk out a safety on me, then we can run the football because they don't have as many people in the box.”

The latter generally happened last night, and Turner responded with a big half. Not all his yards came in the two-back setup, but he finished with 11 carries for 56 yards. In fact, he outgained Tomlinson, who had 36 yards on 13 attempts.

That might not thrill fantasy football owners who used a top-three draft pick on Tomlinson, but the running back himself is fine with it.

“If that's what it takes for us to win the game,” Tomlinson said.

Said Turner: “We're not worried about that. We're not out there counting each other's yards.”

Turner was particularly effective in the fourth quarter, with eight carries for 40 yards, including a 23-yard gain that set up the Chargers' clinching field goal with 1:05 remaining.

“Everything just seemed to loosen up out there,” Turner said. “The holes got bigger. Give credit to the offensive line. They started moving those guys a little bit more.”

One of those linemen, guard Kris Dielman, said the blockers are too busy to worry about who has the ball.

“I don't even know who's running the ball half the time,” Dielman said. “You've got an assignment, execute it, open up the holes and both of them are going to hit it.

“Things are happening so fast, you don't know what's going on. I don't know who's running; I don't even know who scores half the time. You just hear some people start screaming.”

Through four games, Turner has 277 yards and a 6.8-yard-per-carry average; he also had a career-best 51-yard kickoff return last night. Tomlinson has 336 yards and a 3.8 average. Tomlinson also is the team's leading receiver with 19 receptions, including eight last night.

“We've got two great running backs,” Dielman said. “We've just got to give them a little space.”

nice article chargers. this was the steelers defense they ran against last night too, not your niners and raiders. rivers seemed to benefit from them both being in the backfield as well. why not have more weapons on the field if you can. the charger wr's hardly scare anyone, seems like they could make this work out.

I'm both an LdT and Turner owner, and I'm giving some serious thought to playing BOTH this week. With San Fran looming, both of these guys could end up being fantasy studs (see Week 2).

With Addai (bye) and Mike Anderson (whatever) as my other 2 backs, that's exactly what I'll have to do this coming weekend.

Is he not a free agent at the end of this season?

Yes he is Wolf.....which is why I picked him up in drafts anywhere I could get him this year in any of my leagues that have keepers...regardless of whether or not I have LT. :D

I'm thinking he has way too much talent for the Chargers to keep him in a backup role. He will be a restricted FA.....and I don't think SDC will be able to match any offer out there. It would be crazy to pay 2 RBs starting money.

They will tender him the highest they can... If another team offers him something and the charges dont match it, the other team would have to give the chargers a 1st and 3rd round pick for him, which no team in the league would do. I own him in my auction dynasty, but I live in a town called reality. The only way he's a stud next year is if LT goes down... Maybe two years down the road...

Oh man, I got LT2, this sucks!

Another owner is offering me Mike Furrey for Tomlinson - should I do it?

Only if you are insane. That owner just insulted you and I hope you know that.

I have LT and really this situation does not bother me a whole lot. Yes, I would like LT to get the ball 100%, but Turner being on the field will prevent D's from just stacking up against LT. Putting LT in the slot is nice and I can see some big plays coming LT's way with this. LT is still the #1 weapon on the team and he will get more than his share of touches on the ground and air. The better Turner plays the better LT stats will be. I think LT is still the best #1 back in the league. If I were to trade him, it would have to be for something worthy of that.

You're probably right, but I know A.J. will do everything he can to keep him, especially if Turner and LT share the backfield like I think they're planning to do the rest of the season.

this Michael Turner sure is a great story. But it's masking the real issue. Why does it take both this season to do what LT did alone last season?

Now that Rottenheimer has kinda opened up the offense, will they need both to run? Drew Brees notwithstanding...

SD Sports Radio claims that Marty and Cam hatched the two-back idea during the Bolts bye week. Makes sense, since it makes it harder to focus just on LT. If they had thought of this last year, you would have seen it then, Brees notwithstanding.

I think some of you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill here. The past two weeks the Chargers went up against two of the most brutal run defenses in the league, it makes perfect sense for them to let Turner shoulder some of the load and not over work LdT.

Being a LDT owner the past two seasons, I feel he can only benefit from this. There's nothing worse than costing to an 10-3 regular season fantasy mark only to have your squad crash and burn once the playoffs start due to a cracked rib, sore shoulder, etc from your best player. It's painfully obvious that the wear and tear of Martyball were starting take its toll on #21 come late November into December. This season with Turner seeing an additional 10+ carries per game, the result will almost certainly be a fresher, more explosive Tomlinson down the stretch. And for us fantasy nuts that what should REALLY matter!

I really wouldnt worry about this situation much. With some of the cupcakes coming up on SD's schedule over the next few weeks, you'll get your vintage Tomlinson games and then some! :D

The thing that really makes me mad as an LT owner is that Turner was getting all the goal line carries.
