Dr. Love
Hmmm. How about instead of blaming businesses who merely give their customers what they ask for, why not blame the fat, lazy Americans who are stuffing their faces with too much horrible crap every day? darin3
You know what... I went from a svelte high school athlete to a party monkey in college... despite all the beer I drank and pizza I ate in college, I never got to the point where I was really, truly FAT. After college, I settled down but still partied... but age caught up with me so I had a hard time shedding pounds when my activity level slowed, but fast food addiction increased. I got to a point where I was getting on the heavy side - to say the least - but still had decent cholesterol/sugar levels. I tell you what, I moved away from California... away from my 9-5 job where the best eating options were McDonald's, Weinerschnitzel, Burger King or Round Table Pizza... I've lost 15-20 pounds, without really working out... I've gone from a 40 (almost 42) waist to a 38 (which could easily be a 36) waist in about 2 months. I feel healthier. All from cutting out fast food. Yeah, I've cut down my beer intake a bit... but it's mostly fast food. Wow. I still feel the need for a chili dog now and then. I reward myself... but not on a weekly or every-other-day basis. Fatness in America is certainly curable. Learn how to cook some f'in chicken and vegetables. It's because they make money. That's what America is all about. My sister-in-law spent a year in Germany. When she left she was a slightly heavy girl and when she came back she had lost 45lbs and looks slamming now. I asked her what happened and she told me that in Europe they do not eat the portions that we do over here. She said that it was shocking that see what a dinner out looked like compared to going out here for dinner. Example would be outback. If she got a steak over there it was a 6oz with a small portion of veggies and very little in the starch department. Over here you get a 14 oz, buttered up veggies with a mound of mashed potatoes, blooming onion, sodas, etc. America is a fat country. We are at the pinnacle (sp?) of indulgence. That’s what we do. This is who we are. That’s why Radical Muslims hate us so much. It sucks being over weight but when the end times come and there is no food left on the planet, who do you think will out last the rest of the world? US! Because we have the fat reserves and they don't!

theeohiostate
It seems that i'm on a diet 3 months a year, to keep the weight off. SUCKS! A few months ago, i was waiting on my wife at the post office (during one of my work out spurts) and i was looking at all the people that were coming and going from the post office. I was disturbed that EVERY person i saw enter or leave, excluding my wife (111 lbs) was overweight or obese. I look around when out and notice alot of it, people just get content with themselves, their marriage and let themself go, it seems they can't help it. I don't blame McD's for it, it's your fault if you choose to eat that junk. Actually fast food is flat out disgusting, and do my best to never touch the crap anymore. With the kids, entertainment now is video games and TV instead of sports or just plain playing outside. im not fat im big boned... +

A lot of post-school fatness has to do with inactivity during the day. In school, I played pickup basketball 5 times a week and regularly exercised. Now, I sit on my duff all day (be it in my office, in someone else's office, or in court) and come home late and the only time I have for physical activity is 5-7 am (after work is reserved for playing with my son). The break from work is usually just going to lunch. If you sit all day and your only activity is lunch, well ... you end up going from 172 pounds to 245 pounds like moi ... 5-7 am fitness time is fine and all, but a lot of times I have to go to work early or I am trying to catch up on sleep. Getting 5-6 hours of sleep is a tough way to live your life ... All work and no physical exertion makes Beaumont a fat boy ... :whine:

AtomicCEO
I was at my mom's house earlier this week and both my sister and mother were complaining that they need to go on a diet soon. Then we had lunch, and after lunch, my mom brings out chocolate pie for dessert. They seemed surprised that I didn't want any. "Ummm... I don't usually eat dessert. Especially not after lunch." I get off at 5, but spend an hour getting home. That is IF we don't have any thing going on, or the kids don't have any activities we have to get them to. My wife doesn't cook that bad at home for supper, but my lunches and breakfasts are nowhere near healthy right now. I am getting ever so close to the 200 pound mark, which I have never been at before. I say that I am gonna get back in the swing of things when the new year gets here. But I can't guarantee that I will or even if I do, that I will stick with it. Truth is, I just need to committ to it and develop some will power for working out and not eating so poorly. Furd
The biggest problem is a lack of exercise. Americans don't really walk anywhere. How many times have you seen somebody circling around a mall parking lot for a spot when there are plenty 30 or 40 yards from the nearest door? How many times do you see people taking the elevator instead of walking up 1 or 2 flights of stairs? Too much fast food. Too many way hugh portions. Americans seem to like to eat until they are stuffed, rather than quit when they are no longer hungry. Obese people drive up health care costs. You can tout personal responsibility all that you want, but I'm all for just about anything that reduces the incredible number of fat f*cks in our society. I agree that people have to take responsibilty for themselves, but what I'm trying to say is why don't these companies help out the problem? All they want to do is make money instead of trying to make this country better. Businesses like this are too greedy to even consider trying to prevent obesity. detlef
That reminds me of the other day when I caught the news (at the gym of all places). They were doing yet another exposee on why the restaurant industry is the devil. This time it was the shocking fact that 4 out 5 chefs admited that designing dishes to be healthy was not their #1 priority. Are you freaking kidding me! Try 99 out of 100. Do you think the guy at the f-ing BBQ joint is trying to figure out how to lower the fat content of his ribs? Now, truth be told, I do think the food we serve at Jujube is fundamentally healthy but it is far from "health food". That is, we use real products, no hydroginated oils, etc. It is hard to order a complete meal and not at least be served (of course, you do have to eat it) and good amount of vegetables along with the foie gras, chinese bacon, cured duck leg braised in duck fat, and other rather rich delights. I do agree that the biggest issue is the lack of exercise that everyone gets. This also reminds me of a funny story. The last place I ran in Santa Cruz was an Asian noodle joint that could almost be considered a health food place. That is, we used about 90% organic veggies and a lot of them (I used to advertise that there were more vegetables in one of our entrees than 80% of Americans eat in a day). We had a niche with the enormous vegetarian crowd because most of what we served was available veggie. At any rate, one day I'm working the counter and this lady comes in. "Oh are you the owner? I just love your place. I feel so healthy when I eat here. Everything is just so wholesome and nutritious!" "Thank you. That's so nice to hear. What can I get you today?" "Oh, I always get the same thing. A bowl of white rice with a side of braised pork and peanut sauce." "No veggies with that?" "Oh no, I hate vegetables." It was like the lady thought we had some freaking force field of health around the place. FYI: Our braised pork was basically pork butt, soy sauce, ginger, and brown sugar. Our peanut sauce: Peanut butter, coconut milk, sugar, soy sauce, and chili.
Fatman
Not to mention that white rice is essentially filler...
