Draft order

Recommended Posts

I run a local (7 years and counting), and we have kept the same core group of coaches. We intially used random selection for draft order, and then went to a order based on previous year's finish.

Both are OK, but come with different issues: Blind luck for random order, and I'm not sure basing it on the previous year's finish should have anything to do with the next season's draft since we are not a keeper league.

Any other scenarios you guys use which work well?

Thanks!

We take the top 6 finishers and draw for picks 7-12 and the bottom 6 finishers draw for picks 1-6. Seems to be a little more fair

If a non-keeper, then I prefer to a random draw for the order that owners get to pick their draft spot. So, the owner that get sto choose first picks any spot from 1-12 (or however many teams there are), then the second owner gets to pick their spot of those unpicked and so on. Serpentine draft

If a keeper holding a low number of players, then I prefer to use the previous year's finish, with a lottery for x number of teams for the first x number of picks, ala the NBA, based upon league size. IMO, 12 or smaller, lottery the top 3 picks, more than 12, the top 4 picks. Serpentine draft

If a dynasty or keeper that holds a majority of players, than I prefer an NFL style draft, again utilizing a lottery for x number of spots for the FIRST ROUND only, with the other rounds being strictly order of finish

I like that idea of picking a spot.

The way we do it right now is to do a random draw with the first name picking 12th and so on. I may actually think about doing the draft draw like Big Country does his. That's interesting.

To me it just adds another layer of strategy. This year, the consensus was that a top 3 pick was the way to go, followed by the 4-6 spots then jumping down to 11-12. Most did not want the 7-10 spots.

Oddly, the opposite was true just a couple seasons ago when the hot spots to go for where the 6-8 spots.

my league is dynasty, and we do 1-12, then 12-1. So if you win the super bowl, you get #12, and then turn around and get #13. If you win the toilet bowl, you get #1 overall, loser gets #2, and the others also have triangle games and other postseason games, to get them something to do after the season is over and determine picks.

I've been in many many leagues, and the approach I like best by far, is this. In my 14 team re-draft league, we have 8 teams that make the playoffs. The 6 teams that do not make the playoffs this year, are given the first 6 spots in next years draft, with the first draft spot going to the 9th ranked team, the 2nd spot going to the 10th ranked team, etc. etc.

Most of the owners always prefer the 1st pick in next years draft, so allowing the teams ranked 9-14 (that don't play for money this year) are given picks 1-6. That keeps the owners trying to win games, rather than lose games late in the year, even when they know they are out of the playoff run. Very very important.

Some leagues give the last place team the first pick, a reverse order sort of draft order. But that seems to cause owners to prefer losing, rather than fighting to win games, late in the year.

Then the 8 teams that make the playoffs are seeded in the last 8 spots of next year's draft. You can either sort them as teams ranked 1-8 will get picks 7-14, or any way you want. The main point of this idea is to keep the low end teams from attempting to lose games late in the year in order to land LaDainan Tomlinson next year.........

My local redrafts are done by drawing lots. Getting lot #1 didn't help me this year, I picked SA. :D

Have an auction. That way it won't matter...

We changed from random order to a weighted random order using a chit system. Each team gets a certain number of chits based on their finish the previous year. The #1 finisher gets one chit, the #2 finisher gets two, the #3 three, and so on. Then we throw all the chits in a hat and pick the draft order one chit at a time.

So the #1 finisher still has a chance to get the first pick but a reduced chance. Plus many chit jokes.

I would like to join an auction league next year. Obviously it's better live, but is it feasible to do an auction online?

Yes it is.

I do not like (in a redraft league) giving draft order consideration to those who finish in the bottom. That is oftentimes a reward for incompetence.

In a keeper league (which I've never played), I would not be opposed to that type of setup, but for a redraft league you should have a clean slate each year and not give someone the top pick just because he sucked worse than everyone the previous year.

Very cool. They can export the results of the auction directly into MFL too. I suppose the only issue is the same as for any online live draft - getting 12 people together on working Internet connections simultaneously.

Put numbers 1 - 10 in a hat and draw, but getting 1 means you get to pick your spot in the draft first. Two years running the guy who picked the 5th spot out of 10 has won the league.
