Vicky
What's so funny is that it sounds SO much like something Bettman might say. That ahole has ruined the league - he might as well do something this crazy!

That ahole has ruined the league - he might as well do something this crazy! i agree, this sounds like something he would do to get more people to pay attention to the NHL. Next year they're going to be playing games in Europe. I can't remember where i read it, but i don't think it's gonna make much of a difference
Vicky
No, it won't make much difference in ratings here, that's for sure. Europe has enough of their own leagues going on. Maybe he outta fix the stuff he f-ed up in the first place. What a concept, eh?

Vicky
Bettman has done so much to wussify the sport it's sick. BUT it's still hockey and I'm still addicted. As a Caps fan, I say "Screw the Pens" and "Screw Crosby" a lot, but I still don't like the idea of them leaving Pittsburgh. It's kinda sad. Vicky
i like the some of the rule changes they made, like taking out 2 line passes and stuff Getting rid of the 2 line pass was great. But didn't the 2 line pass go into affect under his watch anyway? I don't remember for sure. Things like the instigator - Lame. I think the worst thing ever is the 2 ref system. They can't get ONE to call a game right anymore, much less two.

dabuffbills
Will they be giving recipes for preparing frozen octupi in Detroit? is it really that hard to throw an octopus in a freezer? a couple years ago on the radio, they had a contest that was called "Hockey player or foreign food?" some players names sound a lot like exotic foods
Hugh 0ne
Things like the instigator - Lame. Now, I'm a huge hockey fan, am a firm believer that Bettman is the anti-christ, think almost all the new rule changes suck, am a proponent of old time hockey like Eddie Shore, but have yet to find a reason as to why that rule is a bad one. Please do tell.

Please do tell. The simple answer - The horrible officiating is the problem with it. The long answer - If I'm thinking of the right rule... A player is not only ejected for starting a fight in the last 5 minutes of the game, but they're suspended after that as well. For how many games depends on the number of instances. On the surface, ok, doesn't sound so bad. But it really translates to who drop the the gloves first, not who truly instigated the whole situation. With the horrible officiating lately, the one that does something to get someone to drop the gloves (spearing or something nasty) doesn't get noticed. I've been to more than one game this year that got nastier as it went on because the refs let everything go. In that last 5 minutes the other team would REALLY get nasty and basically leave our boys with nothing to do about it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't - No one sticks up for their teammates and they suck. Stick up for them and get penalized out the a$$ because some little punk happened to do something late in the game. Meh. Bettman is the anti-christ. Vicky was pretty good with her explanation, but the most noticeable change in the game after the instigator rule was passed was that goons and thugs really went after the other teams skill players in an attempt to get them off the ice. Prior to the instigator rule, if someone tried to run a player like Gretzky, Yzerman, or even Cam Neely, the enforcer for those guy's team would go right after the player trying to run them. The threat of the payback was what kept the skill guys from getting wiped off the ice with a cheap shot. Nowadays, if a top skill player gets run down, their teammates are essentially powerless to do anything about it, because any retaliation will fall under the instigator rule. The instigator also gave rise to players like Jarko Ruutu, Matt Cooke, and others who will play as chippy as they can to take a cheap shot without having to fear any reprisal. At least that's my opinion.

At least that's my opinion. All of this is true. But I have to ask if the game suffered for the instigator penalty? I love old school hockey, and I also dont see anything wrong with the 2 to 1 games. But if your trying to increase scoring, what is wrong with limiting the role of the goon? The instigator penalty is rarely called and the goons are fewer and farer betweener. Wait, what? Oh nevermind. Anway, I agree that the two ref system sucks, but that was never really the issue. The issue was that there was never any consistancy in the game as far as what was called and when it was called. Every game was called different depending on who was reffing. And more importantly, what time of the game it was or what time of the season the game was being played. They have really gotten more consistant with the holding and obstructing calls and this is the reason the game has gotten faster. The two line pass rule has done little. And the instigator penalty has done less. On a side note, can you say Kansas City Penguins?
