Olindo Mare to the Saints

OLINDO TO NEW ORLEANS

A league source tells us that the Dolphins have traded kicker Olindo Mare to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

Per the source, Mare's contract will be transferred to the Saints as-is, with no reduction in the $1.5 million base salaries that he is due to earn in each of the next three seasons.

Mare's exit from Miami became a certainty when the Dolphins signed Jay Feely last month. Mare reportedly had been pressing the team to either trade him or release him.

The latest move is a bad sign for incumbent Saints kicker John Carney. The veteran is signed through 2007, and a salary of $820,000. Carney came to the NFL in 1988, and has played for the Bucs, Chargers, and Saints. He has kicked for the Saints since 2001.

Why make a trade? Why give up a draft pick for a kicker who would have been cut anyway?

Who knows, but this way they actually get him instead of having to chance to get him in free agency?

Wow, what a slow day. Kickers getting traded. :D

So they've aquired Vanderjagt and Mare...

What is wrong with Carney?

Vanderjagt never did sign, it turned out to just be a rumor I believe.

Carney is a very accurate kicker, but he doesn't have the leg for kickoffs & long field goals anymore. Looks like he'll end up getting cut now with Mare on board.

Vanderjagt was brought in but not signed.

Carney is reportedly retiring. Heard this afternoon on local sports talk radio (reported by Kenny Wilkerson, the drive time host and also the Saints sideline reporter) that Carney notified the team over the weekend that he was retiring. Again, just what I heard on the radio today, haven't seen anything in writing that confirms this.

They said last night that he is retired. In fact he actually turned in his notice a week ago & they agreed to keep it out of the public so it would be easier for the Saints to bargain for another kicker. :D
