Odell Thurman will be allowed to training camp

Thurman

If middle linebacker Odell Thurman is reinstated next month by the NFL, he’ll get a chance to win a roster spot at Georgetown College during Bengals training camp.

So says Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, who blew off every imaginable question about Thurman since October. Until he decided to give it up to WLW-AM Sports Talk host Paul Daugherty on Monday night.

Reached after the show, Daugherty paraphrased what Lewis told him and said that if Thurman got reinstated Lewis would let him come to training camp.

Word is that Thurman has already applied for reinstatement and that he has been recommended for reinstatement by those in charge of the NFL’s rehab program, but he must remain clean until July 11.

Although Lewis invoked a Thurman public blackout, he and some members of his coaching staff have apparently visited him during his rehab to offer encouragement behind the scenes.

And the Sam Adams era comes to a close. He wasn't nearly what he was 5 years ago. More of a name now than anything.

Just 13 months after signing three-time Pro Bowler Sam Adams to anchor their run defense, the Bengals terminated his contract Monday to make way for younger defensive tackles.

The move comes the same day they announced signing Kenderick Allen, a fifth-year player with the Packers in 2006, two weeks after they drafted Oregon’s Matt Toeaina in the sixth round, and three weeks after they signed Denver’s Michael Myers in free agency. The move also basically assures second-year man Domata Peko starts next to John Thornton in the middle of the Bengals 4-3.

Sam Adams - I sure was wondering w/ all the journeyman DTs visiting (and 2 signing). I was worried when they got (apparently overpaid to do it) Adams last year. He clearly is not what he once was. Too bad, because he came in w/ a very good veteran attitude. Can't pay that much for just an attitude, though.

Thurman - Part of me says cut your losses and run from this kid. You've already moved on, so it's not like a "loss" anymore. But, man, the potential this kid showed as a rookie! I wonder if they could re-work his contract with a "no legal" trouble clause.

They won't have to,as far as drugs and alcohol are concerned.Once a player is reinstated after stage three,he remains in stage three the rest of his career in the NFL,subject to continued testing and indefinite banishment.

Thurman waiting

Wednesday is the first day Bengals middle linebacker Odell Thurman can hear if he'll be let back into the NFL after serving a one-year suspension. But one of his agents, Saf Lawson, said Tuesday while he's confident his client is going to be reinstated he doesn't know when.

But the decision figures to come in time for Thurman to know if he'll be able to report with the rest of the Bengals July 26 to training camp. Thurman's suspension came as a result of the violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

"All indications are that to this point Odell has not had any violations of the drug program and we're hopeful that his application is going to be accepted," Lawson said.

A meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell isn't needed for a final decision and Lawson said he's not aware that one has been set up.

The Thurman watch is officially on...
