French workers are the whiniest in the world

The French worker holds the distinction of being the whining champions of the world. Before one gets too cocky about this observation it must be noted that the US worker comes in fourth in terms of being dissatisfied with their job. The British are number two in the complaining category, Sweden is number three. The major complaints are over pay and the ability to achieve some kind of work-life balance. Considering that the most common complaint about working hours came from the country with the 35 hour work week, one begins to wonder. In contrast, the happiest and most contented workers hailed from Ireland, the Netherlands and Thailand. The lowest morale was noted in Japan but they tended to not complain as much. Overall the survey measured what people expected from work and what they thought they should be getting. It is more than interesting that some of the richest countries had the most disgruntled workers and the nation with the most benevolent labor policy provokes the most complaints from an obviously ungrateful working population.

Surveys like these are always good for some great headlines but it is hard to make out just exactly what they mean. It may mean that people really do have something to complain about and need to vent or it may be a reflection of a country's character. The French, British, Swedish and Americans are opinionated and seem to think that bashing their employer constitutes a right and privilege. The fact taht Ireland and Thailand are so content may also owe more to their national culture than anything else.
