Is this typical?

A fifth-grade promotion ceremony in Rancho Palos Verdes turned into a free-speech battleground Thursday, when students were asked to remove weapons from toys that had been placed on mortarboard caps because of the school's zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus.

On Thursday, before the ceremony, one boy was told he couldn't participate unless he agreed to clip off the tips of the plastic guns carried by the minuscule GIs on his cap.

It was the gun of a 2" plastic toy soldier... :D

Now how the hell is that kid supposed to defend himself against the 2" plastic King of England when he attempts to quarter troops in the kid's lego fortress without consent?

You're all missing the point here. It's so Fracking ridiculous that 5th graders graduate from anything. :D

? ...if they completed their time in one school and are moving on to middle school (grades 6 thru 8th ) then in fact they have graduated

Doesn't meant they wear caps and gowns and have a ceremony in the middle of madison square garden but they have in fact graduated
