SheikYerbuti
My wife has a conference there all next week and I am tagging along. Any Huddlers ever been? Any spots I need to check out??? Thanks! Insert Red Light District joke here. But seriously, it's a beautiful city. The Van Gogh Museum is a standard, if you're into art. The Heineken brewery offers tours, if you're into beer. I recommend taking a boat tour of the city. They offer them all over the place, they're pretty cheap. The city is built around a series of canals (called Ggraghts in Dutch. . .my favorite word because it sounds like Klingon). It's quite striking and your wife will probably find it romantic. There's a casino there too, which I don't recommend. The house edge on all the games is bigger than in the States. Not worth it. Don't forget to write a trip report when you get back. Enjoy! Puddy
I"m heading there Sunday night for business returning next Friday. I've only been once with minimal time for extracurriculars. Like Sheik said, it's a very nice city. The hotel I stayed in last time (Hotel Pulitzer) has a canal surrounding it and is right in the middle of town. Unfortunately they are completely booked next week Boogs - I'm traveling with a group of 6 or 7 but I may find time for a beer or two one evening if you have the time and inclination. The Irish Doggy
Anne Fank museum is very well done. Rijksmuseum (look for Rembrandt's hugh "The Night Watch") is better than Van Gough Museum IMO, but I'm not much of a Van Gough fan. And if you do partake, don't bother buying much. You'll can rock and roll on 3 tokes. Edited June 21, 2007 by The Irish Doggy
AtomicCEO
Take the tram to the Albert Cuyp street market. The wife will enjoy it, and so will you.
bigrocks
I lived in Holland for 2 years. Most folks on this thread hit on the tourist highlights.... Van Gogh, Rijks, Heineken tour, canal tours, etc. The best way to see Amsterdam is on foot. Take a tram to an area that looks interesting, then just walk around. Its a very safe city, though it can get a tad overrun by backpacking college students this time of year. They tend to congregate around the bars, cafes, and coffee shops in the city center, i.e. the train station out to the Leidesplein - so if you can get off the beaten path you will enjoy it more. The Jordaan neighborhood is very nice and has some great cafes. And in my mind, the Amsterdam Historial Museum is one of the best museums in the city. Pope Flick
There's a flower market which is stunning. The two museums are nice as well. The best value I found: rent bikes. Their transportation system is stoopid organized: trains run in the middle of the street and provide the barrier between the two lanes of traffic. Outside the car lanes are bike lanes. ALL lanes (including the bike ones) have their own set of signals that are very dialed in. For ten bucks you can get anywhere in the city quickly. You just have to watch where you're going and stop to take in the sites because there's real desire to crane your neck and not watch where you're going. As far as the libations: believe me, no more than 3 grams of anything and you're set for your stay. Be careful with the locals tho: if you decide to share something most cut theirs with tobacco, whereas Americans are known for smoking their 'clean' and I've found that most don't like the other version if they have one they prefer. Puddy
Damn am I tired. Took the 7:00 pm flight out of Detroit which arrives at 9:00 am here in Amsterdam. Straight to the office I'm not much for sleeping on planes and got about two hours of broken sleep during the 8 hour flight. Took a Unisom with a glass of wine and still watched two movies in a row (Breach - the movie based on CIA agent Robert Hanssen - and I Think I Love My Wife ) I'm now struggling to stay awake at my desk. I have to give two interviews today, one at 4:00 and one at 5:30. By the time I leave the office it will be 7:00 and I'm on no sleep. Boogs - where the hell are you

BeeR
Yes it is...... Hit one of the, er, herbal bars and then cruise the Red Light District. From what I hear, if you hit the "herbal bars" more than briefly, you'll be lucky to be able to get up and walk on your own...
The Vatican Hitsquad
Went there 4 times in the late 80's-early 90's. It's my absolute favorite city in Europe. Nighttime, head straight for the Dam Square and enjoy the view, it's such a vast mix of cultures in one spot and everybody jsut gets enjoys themselves. Never was able to hit the coffee bars myself, i was in the service at the time, but I 've always wanted to go back and spend a day sitting outside at one.
