Also not sure I agree about Federer in tennis. I'm no tennis expert, but what about Sampras and McEnroe?

Earnhardt wasn't even the best in NASCAR never mind the entire sport of auto racing. Richard Petty holds the crown in NASCAR but A.J Foyt, Mario Andretti and Michael Schumacher would also be considered before both of them.

those guys are all associated with numbers. 3, 43, 1, 14. mario andretti is the only one i can't think of one particular number offhand.

McEnroe is more known for his temper and on-court tirades than his achievements. If we took time right now, then yes, Sampras would be the best ever. However, at the pace he's going at, Federer has an excellent chance to eclipse Sampras.

i just google image searched mario andretti, and it looks like he had just about every number under the sun. 5, 6, 7, 3, 2. my only memories of him are in the marlboro penske indy car with the number 3, i think it was.

Samrpas best ever? It could be argued that he isn't even the best American ever, let alone best who ever played the game.

Borg, Llendl, Becker & Laver were all exceptional, and at a time when tennis was its most popular (hence, greater competition). I would venture that the level of play in the late-60's-thru-early 80's was far greater than what we see today. They also were brilliant in their day with inferior equipment, as compared to the way rackets are made today.

I amy be giving Federer the short end of the argument, seeing as how I beleive part of his amazing success today is due to a true lack of quality opponents. But I really beleive those who excelled in the 70's would be just as dominant, maybe moreso, as Federer is today.

Federer will reitre oneday as the alltime wins leader in majors. I'm just not sure that makes him the all-time best.

Maybe there was someone better, but it would have been before my time. I'd say Alexander Karelin, Olympic wrestling (Greco-Roman). He went something like 13 years w/o losing in international competition. All you had to do was look at him and you knew he was a beast.

i'd say john mcenroe bridges the gap between the old and the new, having played all those guys (except maybe laver). i've heard him pretty emphatic on more than one occasion that federer is the best ever, surpassing sampras. you do those guys a major discredit if you think it's all about the equipment. saying becker is better than federer is like saying chi chi rodriguez would kick tiger woods' ass because he used a wood driver. federer, unlike ANY player before him, has absolutely no holes in his game. the guy has the goods.

Except a little clay hole, actually.

X sports - tony hawk

Jay Adams, Tony Alva,Chris Cahill and Stacy Peralta should be thrown in the mix. Without them there would be no Tony Hawk.

But if its just straight X Games, I think Mat Hoffman and Dave Mirra have to be thrown in the mix as well.

clay is a specialist's game. the fact that he's only like the third best clay-court player in the world doesn't indicate a hole in his game, really. guys like mcenroe and sampras never won the french open. but i still think federer will at some point. when i said he has no holes in his game, i really meant: his first serve is awesome, his second serve is awesome, his return is awesome, both of his groundstrokes are awesome, his approach and net games are awesome...you get the idea.

Wrong forum for debate and both were before my time but, many might believe that Rocky Marciano was better than Ali.

Unfortunately, we'll never know the answer, as Ali was suspended from boxing for much of his prime.
