Odell Thurman

Bengals, Thurman await word on linebacker's reinstatement

""All indications are that, to this point, Odell has not had any violations of the drug program, and we're hopeful that his application will be accepted," advisor Safarrah Lawson said."

With Brooks at MLB and Thurman at OLB that team could be scary.

Given Thurman's past performance at MLB, why wouldn't CIN move Brooks to the outside?

So they can both start.

That will be determined in TC. It sounds like he'll start at the bottom of the depth charts and work his way back up.

Brooks is bigger and Thurman would make a fine WLB in my opinion. Where would Brooks play? I don't think they'd move him to SLB, but you never know.

I have read Brooks has pretty much lived at the facilities this off season and should start somewhere.

If he had been in this year's draft he probably wpould have been picked right after Willis.

Past performance aside, I don't think the Bengals are going to invest one more minute into this kid. Marvin Lewis has already made up his mind that he can't trust him.

Which must be why Lewis was visiting him in the offseason even though publicly he put forth statements that Thurman was for all pratical purposes dead to him.

From ther Enquirer

Thurman's future with the Bengals probably is as an outside linebacker, primarily on the weak side where his speed and play-making ability would be utilized. The Bengals took Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft a year ago; he had an impressive offseason and staked claim to the starting job in the middle.

That speculation may be true, but Thurman has proven himself when live bullets were flying.

Brooks had a great 10 tackle game vs TB in a start last season, but in 4 other starts he never had more than 3 solo tackles and his second half of the season was completely non-existant. Lots of guys look great in shorts & tees and can't play a lick in the regular season.

That's true but the word is he has pretty much lived at the facilities all off season and really dedicated himself to becoming the starter. Anything can happen and the reporter is just guessing but moving him to SLB seems doubtful.

He said he was immature last season and was lost so he did take responsibility.

I would think if he makes it Brooks and Odell would make a formiddable tandem. We'll have to just wait and see.

I still don't think Thurman will be starting for the Bengals ever again (unless a couple guys get injured). They might retain him on their roster in 2007, but there's just no way they'll put themselves in a position to rely on him as a starter.

It's awfully hard to ignore just how good his performance on the field was, don't you think? You keep that much talent sitting on the bench? If he gets popped again, then you're starting a lesser player anyhow, and you're still paying Thurman - and you don't use his ability?
