Grits and Shins
Feel free to NOT read this or to ignore it ... My son had a tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park, New York. The tournament included 95 other teams from across the US (including Hawaii), The team and coaches are bunked up inside Dreams Park the entire week with an 8 game guarantee. The team did okay going 5-2 in pool games and 1-1 in bracket games and for the most part played pretty good baseball. The park itself has something like 21 fields and is very organized and well run. Fences are at 200 yards so there are a number of home runs. We arrived in Syracuse Friday morning (6/29) and took a leisurely drive down 20 to get to Cooperstown stopping in a hole in the wall place in some small village. We arrived at 1:30'ish and they were busy frying wings for that evening ... so of course we had the wings (and a wonderful chicken sandwich as well). The wings were great. Opening ceremonies were Saturday and among other things 3 veterans sky dived into the stadium and the local VFW held a traditional flag ceremony in honor of the troops and 4th of July. The boys played 2 games each day until the rain hit Wednesday. Our second game Wednesday was against a team from California and we were winning 2-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd inning (we were home) when the game was cancelled. This dropped the team out of the top 30 and we only got 1 first round bye instead of 2. We ended up facing the same team later that evening and lost 6-2 to finish our Dreams Park adventure. Later a team from Texas (Texas Stampede) went on to defeat a North Carolina team (Crush) on 4 solo home runs 4-3. Obviously while in Cooperstown a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame is an absolute requirement. If you like baseball you will like this hallowed place ... the plaque room was the best. We went to the HoF 2 seperate days. We also stopped by The Farmers' Museum which was interesting. My son milked his first cow. Then we went upstate to spend some time with my in-laws. This is when I meet my mother-in-law's live-in (they have been living together for 20+ years) ... allow me to say .... OH MY GOD. I arrive and this hillbilly and his brother are lounging in the trailer. NEITHER has a shred of hair growing on top of their head but BOTH have a major comb over. By the end of the day my MIL's significant other's comb over is all wadded together in one strand sitting on top of his forehead. to say they are not fooling anybody in regards to their baldness ... between the two of them they probably have 12 teeth. To make matters worse this guy has about a 3rd grade education but believes himself to be an expert on EVERYTHING. It was painful to sit in the same room with this throw back. My MIL has a mini-family re-union planned for Saturday where I will meet all of my wife's family for the first time ... so what does she do? She trips and splits her lip wide open (requiring 12 stiches and breaks her nose). So while she is at the ER with ALL of the women people start showing up that I have never met ... meanwhile the hillbilly pulls a disappearing act. So now I'm tap dancing for a bunch of hungry people whom I have only met for the first time. Tuesday we make the 3-4 hour trip to Niagra Falls. Very impressive, I simply could not stop taking pictures. It was worth the trip alone. If you go you MUST pay for a trip on the Maid of the Mist where they boat you directly into the Horse Falls. Also worth doing was the Cave of the Winds where you get to stand less than 15 feet from the falls. We also visited the Corning Museum of Glass. For the most part the kids were not interested in the very interesting glass work on display but thoroughly enjoyed making a real glass flow and ornament. They also enjoyed watching the glass makers make stuff (it was impressive). The highlight of the trip was Niagra Falls. If you get a chance, how showing us some pictures of Niagra Falls?
