Culpepper released

The Miami Dolphins terminated the contract of quarterback Daunte Culpepper, the team announced today.

His cap hit is 5.5 million this year. If the Dolphins would have kept him it would have been 6.9 million so It saves them 1.4 million against the cap for this year.

Wow. Didn't think it would happen this fast. So where does he go? Raiders? Jags? Not really a great long-term solution for him in either of those places.

Professional and classy move by the Dolphins. Jacksonville should draw the most publicity, but there's a few teams where Culpepper where I think he could have success. (JAX, NYJ, DET)

NYJ - Pennington gets no respect from any fantasy ranking and Jet fans are definetely opening their eyes to the idea that he is not a very good quarterback, after countless criticisms.

DET - For those that think Culpepper was a factor of Moss. Now he can be a factor of Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, and Mike Martz.

Wouldn't mind having him here! What better then to have him tutor Russell for a season or two.

The problem is that Moss was just there. Culpepper wants a chance to win and be a part of an organization that wants him. Not to be a mentor on a crappy team, no offense (except to kp).

The Idiot should not have tried to holdout for money with a totally blown out knee. At least we got something for him.

The Atlanta Falcons are suddenly on the list of interested teams...

Jacksonville, Chicago, Oakland, Cleveland, maybe even the Pats could be good fits. And seriously, if Vick gets busted by the NFL (not sure how he will avoid that now that he is indicted) the Falcons will need help.

Oh gosh no...we do NOT want Culpepper on this team...

The Falcons makes the most sense, from both a need standpoint, and fulfilling his desire to be a long term starter. I'd love to see him go to DET in Martz's system with Roy and Wonder Rookie

Does anyone seriously think he's going to "bounce back" to any real level of play? I'm guessing he's one good hit away from retirement.

Still, this was a guy who pretty much went neck and neck with Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb as the best QB in the league for 4-5 years running. Now maybe he was helped mightily in doing that in having Randy Moss on his team, but he did do it.

I don't watch the cap room situation much, but if I were the Falcons I would be looking at him to potentially fill in for Mike Vick. If I were the Raiders I would be looking at him to provide Jamarcus Russel with some time to season himself before he is thrown in the game. If I were the Bears I would be looking at him because Rex Grossman may have to be replaced. Jacksonville needs a reliable QB. Baltimore can maybe use a new QB.

Atlanta intrigues me now but Vick has told Blank, McKay, and Petrino he was not involved in any illegal activity. Now it worked out with the airport so I expect them to stay true until further notice on the Vick scenario.

It's a quarterback, the Bucs are bound to take a look at him. :D

Very true... and wouldn't surprise me at all if that's where he ends up.

Florida loves thier college football as much as texas... culpepper went to school in FL, jax needs to sell some tickets, I am coming around to the Culpepper in Jax rumors, I'll take him.

Quinn Grey would be a good fit for Atl. Big, strong arm, can run... needs some work, but he can play. Gerrard is a backup, nice guy, nothing more.

Oh, you do know your team, Monkey. Chucky just cannot get enough QB's on his roster, it seems:

Free agent Culpepper wastes little time, visits with Buccaneers

July 19, 2007

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

TAMPA, Fla. -- Free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, two days after being released by the Miami Dolphins.

The Bucs declined to disclose details of the meeting, which occurred in Tampa -- though not at the team's training facility.

Miami unsuccessfully tried for weeks to trade the 30-year-old former Pro Bowl quarterback who was coming off major surgery to rebuild his right knee when the Dolphins acquired him before last season.

Culpepper was cleared to start last season's opener with the Dolphins, but struggled with his mobility and was sacked 21 times in the first four games. The team shut him down so he could continue rehabbing and eventually placed him on injured reserve.

When Miami traded for Trent Green six weeks ago, Culpepper became expendable.

On paper, the Bucs do not appear to have a need for Culpepper. The team already has five quarterbacks on the roster, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski and Jake Plummer, although Plummer has said he is retiring.

would you really want culpepper over pennington? for whatever reason culpepper seems to have lost what ever ability he had to be an effective QB a few seasons ago , his ability to make a good read and deliver the ball has to be in question and as long as pennington can stay healty he should be the starter in ny ....im afraid we have seen the best of culpepper

and i'll make the same arguement for detriot kitna is a much better QB AND PUT UP STRONG NUMBERS last season and should be able to improve on those this season , so why would you need culpepper who cant seem to do much more then throw INT'S .....culpepper can only hope to land a nice back up job somewhere but as far as competing for a starting spot i think he'll find that tough . he's not a very accurate passer and i'll make the arguement that he never has been , i thnk moss made him look a lot better then he was with his ability to go get the ball no matter where culpepper threw it
