I did not see the greatest American rock band listed. I did not vote.

I agree Tool was totally awesome at one short period in time Balla. I'm a friend with their original bass player and their art guy (who is evil gop's first cousin and grammy award winner). We still get front row tickets, VIP passes, and parking, whether at the Gorge in George WA or in LA. Tool's first demo tape and Opiate (1990) was soul shattering. Now they are the state of the art prog rock band that have learned to bid their time and stay relevant better than most. Despite the personal link, I don't know if I put Tool in my top 15 of American rock bands

Yeah, because "Smells Like Teen Spirit": was a kickass song and there were a half-dozen sing-a-long tunes on Nevermind that spoke volumes to milli9ons.

Um, yeah, there were.

Aside from that, you're totally right.

Unlike bubble gum crap like VH?

I had to circle back on this and agree. I never ever understood the clamoring towards a noodling guitarist with a comical front man in a spandex jump suit doing splits. How, exactly, did these guys get tons worse after they hired a Bog Seger wannabe with synthesizers?

IMO they sucked when they had Ronald Mcdonald and sounded like New Kids afterwards.

Shouldn't rock sound like rock?

Awesome bro! Seriously...holla at me next time you go to their show...I'd love to make it, especially front row! I saw them on this last tour (10,000 days) and I was glad to see Maynard out in the open. I saw TooL the first time at the Lollapalooza 1993. Both concerts (92'-93') were incredible...the band lists are below. 1993 Had Rage open up with TooL second, playing their Opiate album.

1993

Main Stage: Primus, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr., Fishbone, Arrested Development, Front 242, Babes in Toyland, Rage Against the Machine

Side Stage: Tool, Sebadoh, Cell, Unrest, Mercury Rev, Mosquito, Free Kitten, Royal Trux, Tsunami, Mutabaruka, The Cocktails, Scrawl, Luscious Jackson, Genitorturers, Truly, Eggs, Girls Against Boys, Thurston Moore, Glue, Karl Hendrick's Trio, Hurl

1992

Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush, Temple of the Dog.

Side Stage: Jim Rose Circus, Sharkbait, Archie Bell, Porno for Pyros, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Sweaty Nipples, Arson Garden, Seaweed, Seam, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., The Look People, Stone Temple Pilots, Vulgar Boatmen, Truly, Skrew, Tribe, The Authority, Samba Hell, Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder.

I hate that I didn't go see Lollapalooza. I didn't think I'd like a "festival". I was an idiot.

KISS should be on the list, though, regardless of how lame they have gotten on the last few farewell tours.

A friend of mine and I were watching "Gene Simmons Family Jewels", which I think is a fantastic show. She said to me "What's the deal with KISS? I never listened to them". I said, there was a long period of time where they were the most badass band on the planet. We broke out the greatest hits album and listened to the whole thing. Afterward she said "THAT'S badass?? It sounds like grocery store music!!"

And you know something, I agree. . .

No... no way... no F'n way...

KISS Alive is SUCH a fargin great rock album, one of the best of all time which in no way does it even resemble "grocery store" music. And Alive 2 is another great album, the 6 albums the live songs are taken from themselves are great. "Almost Human" may be played in a Grocery store in Hell, but never a Stop n Shop.

<<Ginormous KISS fan>>

I never ever understood the clamoring towards a band whose lead singer was a heroin-addled freak decked out in thrift store clothing and pink hair, whose voice sounded like Froggy on amphetamines, and who took to smashing his guitar on stage and flying into his drummer's set to make audiences forget that he only knows three chords. How, exactly, did these guys get a major label record deal when their live shows sounded like a bunch of 15-year-olds learning how to play their instruments in mommy and daddy's garage?

I imagine the answer has to do with the fact that Nirvana, like Van Halen, wrote some kick-ass tunes and that listeners care much more about that than the front man's psychological/fashion issues.

van halen sucks. they really do. i kind of enjoy some of their earlier stuff from a guilty pleasure, flashback to when i was 10 years old standpoint. the haggar era stuff is just dreck. they epitomize everything that was wrong and lame with "hard" rock in the 80s. yuck. put their music next to something like husker du and watch VH get squashed like the pathetic little phaggy hairspray-and-spandex wankers they are. :D

you mean van halen jr. and van halen iii?

Oh, Lord, Van Halen III was awful. That was the final nail in their coffin, IMO.

I'm with you about Husker Du (Bob Mould's awesome) and agree that the vast majority of the "hair bands" of the '80s sucked. But I'm still a fan of much of VH's material and the early '80s Def Leppard. And, geez, even Axl used waaay too much hairspray back when Appetite first came out.

Jebus. .. Nirvana has only gotten 1 vote so far? Wow. I'm not sure I'd vote for them myself, but still .. .

I'd like to cast my votes for Bad Brains and Spike Jones and the City Slickers.

Missed BB last month at the Sasquatch Festival. Hope it wasn't my last chance.

HR ain't in the band no more, and they got 2 honkeys. . .as far as I'm concerned, it ain't Bad Brains you missed.
