Trend: Edged out at the stripe

While Edgerrin James didn't do much of anything until late last season, it was particularly frustrating to see Marcel Shipp steal four December touchdowns—all of them from in close.

The Cards changed coaching staffs this offseason, but the possibility of Edge losing goal line looks seems to be sticking around. Granted, it's a small sample size, but this preseason James received exactly one carry inside the red zone, and it went for no gain. J.J. Arrington has four of Arizona's other seven running back carries inside the red zone—five, if you count a three-yard touchdown he had called back. And Marcel Shipp converted his shorty attempt against the Chargers last weekend while Edge was nursing a hamstring tweak.

On the surface, this doesn't seem like much to worry about. But reports out of Arizona indicate that James has struggled in goal line drills in practice as well, while Shipp has looked solid. His success converting against the Bolts in the regular season dress rehearsal doesn't bode well for James' goal line potential.

Again, it's a small sample size that requires plenty of extrapolation. But with the gaggle of backs lodged between 10 and 20 in the rankings, any little differentiator is worth noting.
