AtomicCEO
If your TV doesn't have a VGA or DVI input, or your laptop doesn't have a video output... you'll need a device. And I'm not sure which is the cheaper way to go... A VGA to video converter device, or a PCMCIA card with a video output. Basically... If your TV doesn't have a computer input, I'd scrap it. Duchess Jack
here's the kicker - it has a DVI input - but the manual is saying that I will need an adapter to put it into the HDMI slot. What sense does that make. It seems that there should be a cable that goes from the laptop to the DVI port on the TV quite easilly. not sure what I am missing or if I am understanding things... if I am understanding them correctly, it sucks because I only have 2 HDMI ports and both are being used by my cable and DVD player thanks for the thoughts, brother

Kid Cid
That will only get you the video. You'll also need some type of audio connection as well. It all depends on the type of input your audio player of choice sports. You can use the headphone out of your computer and you'll most likely need two RCA inputs for the TV or stereo. Also available at Radio Shack.
H8tank
Most all laptops have at least an S video out or RCA or 15 pin, this and maybe a cheap radio shack adapter will get you video. Your laptop will have a headphone jack, this plus a 3.5mm to RCA adapter from radio shack will give you audio. Easy to do, don't over think it. edit to add, forget the HDMI angle, keep it simple. All laptops have a 15 pin VGA, but I've rarely seen anything other than old Apple Powerbooks with an RCA or SVideo output. Have you seen a cheap adapter that will downscale VGA to interlaced video? I didn't see any more less than $100.
Duchess Jack
just got back from Radio Shack. I bought the Svideo cable (which the laptop has) and a splitter for the sound. crossing my fingers. I will let you cats know how it works out. not only is this going to be cool for the party - I have been wanting to introduce the wench to civII for a while and its more likely that we'll both play together around the TV than we will in either of our offices
Azazello1313
so, would I hook the speakers up from the laptop to my reciever? would one output on the laptop (and a left and right on the reciever) give a problem with having stereo sound the headphone jack carries both channels of sound. the headphone jack-to-red/white RCA audio is one of the simplest, most common audio cables out there. should be easy to find.
