Skippy
I have played a lot of nice courses around the country at one time or another and while there are some that I really thought were very nice it always seemed like I would just end up somewhere else that was nicer and so on. Today I have for sure played the best golf course in my life. We played Mystic Rock at the Nemacolon resort. It is the old home of the 84 Lumber Classic that was a stop on the PGA tour until this year when the daughter of the owner took over and quit the PGA thing. It is the first time that I have ever played golf with a caddie but this wasn't the normal carry your bag caddie it was what is called a fourcaddie. This guy goes out with a group of four and stands out in the fairway to watch your ball. He gives you yardage to everything and anything. He gives you all sorts of tips on where to hit the ball and he will read a green for you, with you, or whatever you like. Playing golf at Mystic Rock was like a day in the life of the Rich and Famous. It started with valet parking when you went to drop you bag. Then they sent your shoes down to the locker room where the attendant cleaned them up for you. After you checked in at the proshop you go to the locker room that is just amazing. It has 60" plasma TV's everywhere with a billiard table as well as all sorts of chess, checkers, and some other board games that you can sit and enjoy. There is all sorts of PGA memorable all over the place and it just reeks of top notch. The shower was the nicest shower that I have ever been in and really I only took a shower after golf because of how nice the place was. I am used to peasant golf so I took full advantage of the first class amenities. As for the golf, well it was probably the best golf that I have played in the last five years. I shot an 81 but to be honest I was disappointed when I added up the score. I was sure that I was going to be in the 70's. I knew it was going to be a great day when I drove the first hole, (309), and ended up starting off with a bird. My worst hole was the seventeenth which is a par three that I dunked my drive in the water. I ended up with a 7 on that hole but it was the worst score on my card. Even the 45 minute weather delay to let the storm pass did not put a damper on this day. My buddy told me that the place is rated by golf digest as a top 25 places to play but I am not sure if that is true or not. I was thinking maybe it was top 25 places to play/stay but it is my number one place to play. My day at Oakmont CC got canceled due to weather this summer but when we get out to Oakmont this may change but I honestly don't think it will. The big reason is that even though the course was rated at 73.3 with a slope of 143, it was very playable. Greens were rolling at 11.5 before the rain and rolled very true. This day was an incredible treat that I will not soon forget. If any of you golfing huddlers ever make it up near the Pittsburgh area and want to play a top notch course, I am up for a round. Have you ever been up to Koehler Wisconsin to play Blcak Wolf Run or...I think it is called Whistling Straights? I have played the Run...but haven't been able to play the other...I have seen it. If you play the Run...be sure to stay in the Hotel...AWESOME amenities there too. Great place to bring the wife if she likes to play...or she can stay behind and enjoy the hotel. 81..with a 7...not bad. I would have to give you at least a shot a side... I was going to go to upper Michagan and or Wesconsin with a few friends and our wives this past summer. Early summer, but the weather was not so great. I have a guy that always finds the places we go so really unless there is some sort of deal or if it is something that we can take our non golfing wives to, we don't end up there. This spring he is looking at Florida and or Georgia for our annual 12 man trip. We normally end up in Myrtle Beach but most of us prefer to go some place a little further south since we go in early March. Oh and Whistling Straights is supposed to be a great course. Skippy
How much was it Skip? It was a free birthday gift. I was the guest of someone that is a member there. I do know that he gets charged $85 for each for the three of us that he took up there. Normail fee would have been $195 for me to try to book a round on my own. I will say this though, at $85 I would play this course very often. I can't swing the $195 unless it was just a simple treat for myself but me and the guy that is member there are pretty good friends and I am sure that once I make it clear that I will pay the $85 he will take me out there more often.
