rocknrobn26
...basically a tumor on her pituitary gland. She's 9+ yo, also has female incontinence. The vet, who I trust w/o question, suggested a med program called Anipryl®. it has about a 40% success rate, but it also has the fewest side effects. Nilly is a "special" dog. Always seemed like she had a screw loose, hates strangers, tries to protect us, but is endearing to the people she knows, very unlike our other dogs that loved everyone. Anyway: 1) Any info from other owners that had a dog w/ this will be appreciated. 2) Sugar....Any of your insight well be greatly appreciated. 3) At what point does one say it's over? 4) Thanks for the vent. As goofy as she is, we will miss her, and I know my wife will have a major void if we have to put her down. TIA rr26

SteelBunz
Awwww RR......sorry to hear that. I love your Nilly stories! From this page : Dog Owner's Guide Anipryl® was approved for use in canine Cushing's disease in June 1997. Anipryl® helps restore the balance of natural brain chemicals which in turn alleviate the symptoms of the disease. In clinical trials, about 70 percent of dogs responded favorably with a lessening of symptoms and a reduction in cortisol production. That's quite a difference, RR....40% vs 70%. I'd try it! darin3
Sorry to hear, RR. But looks like Bunzie's link shows a much more favorable outlook. Even at 40%, that's better than the outlook if you don't treat it. I'm sure with the love that your family gives her, that she'll pull through. Sugar Magnolia
Nothing I can add but what was not stated in the article Bunz linked. If the drugs do not help her incontinence it is a personal choice how long to prolong her life. The drug therapy might actually help her temperament since it is restoring a chemical balance in the brain. I don't know any research done to substantiate this so don't get your hopes up too much on this. Sorry you are having to go through this. Clubfoothead
My dog died about 6 months ago. With everything going on, we had to assign a value to him within our budget. We spent what we could afford which prolonged his life comfortably for about two months. About the time I was going to have to make the call to put him down because of the increasing costs of dealing with his CHF, I woke up and he was dead. I loved that dog and I'm glad I spent the money. Wish you all my best.

SteelBunz
Clubby....I'm sorry to hear about your dog. RR....I'll admit....the incontinence is a tough one for many reasons. Hard on the people (and house....let's face it)....but it's also hard on Nilly. A month before Ashley died...she had incontinence, and for a dog that worked so hard to please us all the time, I could tell that part made her feel bad.....like she'd done something wrong. This was a dog that had only ONE accident in the house as a puppy...she was just the greatest. So think about some doggie diapers for Nilly. Until you see if the meds ease that part some. Sounds funny, I know....but aside from being an easier cleanup for you guys....it might even make her feel like she's at least not making a mess on the floor. I just found this website.....how useful! Pet Diapers

rocknrobn26
A little update: Vet just called and it seems the drug she is on for her incontinence and the Cushing's drug can have nasty side effects such as seizures, hypertension and a couple I can't remember. Because she is not exhibiting most of the Cushing's symptoms, he recommended that we hold off on the Cushing drug and do a "wait and see". The wife and I agree, as there is no cure for Cushings and the meds just minimize the symptoms. The diapers, while practical, are not gonna happen. Just can't do it and she won't tolerate them very well I am sure. Thanks for all the suggs and links. Those of you who commented and met Nilly are too kind and your thoughts of her are appreciated. Thanks again all!
