Shockey wants back in the game, Coach

By LARRY HOLDER

If anything can be said about New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey throughout his rehab process as he tries to return from a sports hernia, it is that he certainly wants to be involved.

Saints coach Sean Payton would welcome Shockey to be in uniform this week against Carolina if only to get the player off his back. Shockey shadowed Payton through most of Sunday's win over the Raiders, trying to give his input and encouragement to Payton, his fellow players and anyone else who would listen.

"I know he's anxious to get back and not have him standing next to me with a towel in his hand. Hopefully it's this week," Payton said.

On one call from an official that Shockey disagreed with, Shockey fired his towel straight up in the air in disbelief. He was also the first to congratulate Reggie Bush on his first touchdown and the first to approach Taylor Mehlhaff after connecting on his first career successful field goal attempt.

Shockey then joined Payton on the field following the final play of the first half in arguing with the officials about placing one second back on the clock after a Billy Miller catch and the Saints tried calling timeout as time expired. Payton said he didn't anticipate Shockey having his back.

"It wasn't part of the plan," Payton said. "He just kind of invited himself. He's into it. It's important to him and I like that about him."

Shockey bit his tongue concerning the call - he's been fined three times already this season. But he couldn't hold back his willingness to be apart of the team, healthy or not.

"The last Sunday was a party I wanted to be in and I wasn't invited to," Shockey said. "(Marques Colston) is seeing what I'm seeing out there. Other guys are stepping up and making plays. I can't wait to personally get back. I know Marques can't wait."

Payton reiterated his confidence in having Colston and Shockey back for Sunday's game in Carolina. Colston practiced on a limited basis all last week, while Shockey was limited last Wednesday and sat out the final two sessions leading up to the Oakland game.

Shockey said it was smart to sit out against the Raiders as the original target date for his return was either this Sunday or when the Saints face San Diego in London in two weeks.

"I know Sean and the Saints have invested a lot in me," Shockey said. "The first three games I was really playing on one leg and I know I can play a lot better than in those first three games. It's about being smart and not pushing it. I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to that because I'm very competitive and very impatient when it comes to injuries."

Payton said he didn't feel as confident for the returns of defensive tackles Sedrick Ellis (knee) and Antwan Lake (groin). Ellis said he's going to see how his knee feels later in the week. He's missed the last two games and his original prognosis had him possibly missing the next two games as well.

Fanball - Shockey

Saints: Shockey has shot to return

10/13/08 01:12 PM

THE NEWS

Jeremy Shockey, who is recovering from a sports hernia, has a shot to return to the Saints' lineup in Week 7, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View

This is encouraging news, but coach Sean Payton said he needs to see how Shockey looks in practice on Wednesday, and how quickly he bounces back on Thursday. Last week, Shockey practiced on Wednesday, but the soreness prevented him from testing the injury again.

New Orleans Saints practice report: Oct. 15

Posted by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune October 15, 2008 2:27PM

Some good news and bad news on the Saints' injury front Wednesday, with several players returning to action while some new players took the day off.

Tailback Reggie Bush missed practice with swelling in his left knee. Saints Coach Sean Payton said it's an issue that Bush has been dealing with from time to time this year, and the Saints have tried to manage his workload accordingly. He said Bush might also be out or limited during Thursday's practice, but it sounds like he's still expected to play in Sunday's game at Carolina.

Guards Jahri Evans (ankle) and Carl Nicks (illness) are also new additions to the Saints' injury report. They both missed practice Wednesday. We'll get a better feel for their chances of playing Sunday as the week goes on. Matt Lehr and Jermon Bushrod filled in during practice.

Defensive tackles Sedrick Ellis (knee) and Antwan Lake (groin) also missed practice. Neither one appears likely to return to the lineup this week.

Meanwhile, receiver Marques Colston (thumb) and tight end Jeremy Shockey (sports hernia) returned to the practice field on a limited basis - as did cornerback Aaron Glenn (ankle) and safety Kevin Kaesviharn (back). Receiver David Patten returned from a groin injury and fully participated.

Colston will almost certainly be back in the lineup after he had a good week of practice last week. Shockey should also be a safe bet to return, but the big test for him will be how quickly he recovers from the increased workload. Payton said both players looked good on Wednesday.

New Orleans Saints Oct. 16 practice report

Posted by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune October 16, 2008 1:42PM

Tailback Reggie Bush did not participate in team drills again on Thursday because of swelling and soreness in his left knee. But he was involved in individual drills, and he and Coach Sean Payton have continued to describe his inactivity as a precaution. It still appears as though he will play Sunday at Carolina.

Bush has been dealing with occasional swelling since training camp, when he missed a handful of practices, and Payton said he aggravated the condition with a specific injury in Week 1 against Tampa Bay. Obviously Bush has managed to play well, with great speed and explosiveness throughout the year, but it's been a long six-week stretch. Payton said he'll probably be fighting through it until the bye week in two weeks.

Receiver Marques Colston (thumb) and tight end Jeremy Shockey (sports hernia) also appear on track to return to the lineup Sunday. Both players participated in team drills on a limited basis Thursday. Payton said it was a good sign that Shockey was able to get back out there for a second straight day, with only a minor amount of soreness after Wednesday's practice.

Guards Jahri Evans (ankle) and Carl Nicks (illness) were both back during team drills. Evans was limited and Nicks was full-go. It looks like they'll both be able to play Sunday. Also practicing on a limited basis were cornerbacks Mike McKenzie (knee) and Aaron Glenn (knee), safety Kevin Kaesviharn (back) and defensive tackle Antwan Lake (groin).

Defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis remained out with a knee injury, and he is not expected to play Sunday.

The Saints released backup tight end Sean Ryan on Thursday, which could be a sign that Shockey's return is imminent. He was replaced on the roster by receiver/return specialist Courtney Roby.

Roby, 25, was originally a third-round draft pick out of Indiana in 2005. He appeared in 25 games with the Tennessee Titans between 2005-06, catching 23 passes for 317 yards and one touchdown. But he has only appeared in one NFL game since then, with Indianapolis earlier this year on special teams.

The Saints also made two moves on their practice squad, replacing cornerback Darrell Hunter and receiver Joe West with cornerback Quincy Butler and guard Cameron Stephenson.

Finally.

New Orleans Saints' Bush, Shockey, Colston should all play

Posted by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune October 17, 2008 12:52PM

Reggie Bush, Jeremy Shockey and Marques Colston are all likely to play in Sunday's game at Carolina. All three of the Saints' offensive stars are listed as probable on the official injury report after they practiced on a limited basis Friday.

Saints Coach Sean Payton said he expects Bush to be "100 percent" healthy and not limited at all in Sunday's game on offense or in the punt return game. "He'll play his normal role," Payton said.

Both he and Bush reiterated that they just wanted to rest Bush's left knee, which has experienced occasional swelling and soreness throughout the season. They said it will be good for Bush to play on natural grass the next two weeks, followed by a bye week.

Four other players are listed as probable for Sunday - guards Jahri Evans (ankle) and Carl Nicks (illness), cornerback Mike McKenzie (knee) and safety Kevin Kaesviharn (back).

Three players are listed as questionable - cornerback Aaron Glenn (ankle) and defensive tackles Brian Young (knee) and Antwan Lake (groin). Young missed Friday's practice after experiencing some soreness in his long-standing knee injury on Thursday night, but Payton said he thinks he'll be able to play.

Only one player is listed as out - defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis (knee).

PER CBS:

Marques Colston, WR NO

News:

Saints WR Marques Colston is expected to return for a divisional game Sunday at Carolina. Colston, the Saints' best receiver the previous two seasons, said he practiced with very few limitations and has gotten used to making catches with a small plastic splint on his surgically repaired left thumb. "It's just been really no issues with it at all," said Colston, who hasn't played since the season opener. "I got a lot of good work in this week. I feel comfortable and I know the guys around me feel comfortable with me being in there, so hopefully this is the week I get a chance to get on the field. This is a huge game. This would definitely be a game where I feel like if I can get out there and make an impact, this would be the one."

Analysis:

If Colston is able to play against the Panthers then he should be considered a solid Fantasy option. When healthy, Colston is a No. 1 Fantasy WR, so hopefully he can return at 100 percent this week.
