Buying a Smoker

We should be closing in a month or so and one of the first things I always said I'd buy when I got out of our apartment building was a charcoal smoker. I know we have many foodies, and BBQ fans in here (in fact, I recall a thread about smokers last year or the year before).

This Weber model looks to be a good one to me but then again...what do I know? http://www.shopperschoice.com/item_item_432.html?PID=1919523

At $299, it is right in my price range. Thoughts welcome!

You ask what you know. I say to you that you are ignorant. I do not mean this in a pejorative manner. A person who is ignorant but is aware that he is so, is ready to learn.

But it is late and I am tired--so I am pasting previous thoughts I have posted on this topic:

You are not sure you will want to spend that much money? My eyes always fill with tears when I hear these words in a discussion about the Big Green Egg. There's a certain sadness knowing that someone will go through life never knowing all that is the Big Green Egg. I will attempt a metaphor that may help you. As a youth, you recall how it felt when you first masturbated? It was wonderful, wasn't it? You thought you had attained the ultimate experience. At that moment, you knew only bliss. Then, at some point, you realized that masturbation can be nice, but something was missing. And then, you experienced relations with a woman and suddenly, you knew you would never be the same. You would never experience life in the same way. Your view of everything was forever shifted. And you knew that you could not wait to be with a woman again. And then, you made love to a woman whom you loved and who loved you in return. The glow that surrounded the two of you was magical. Every synapse in your brain and every nerve in your body exploded at once. For that moment, you were enveloped in nirvanna.

Well, outdoor stoves (gas grills) and other smokers/grills can be nice. They can make your food hot with a pleasant flavor. Your friends will smile nicely and say "Good grub." But deep down, you know that something is missing. Something that you can't put a price on. There is a need, nay, a hunger within you. The Big Green Egg calls to you--It will satiate you like no other can. In the end, you will be spent and exhausted. There will be an aura of joy that will last well beyond your meal. And as you take your last bite, you will already be planning your next cook.

Do what you must, save how you will, but The Egg waits for you. With gentle smoke, deep warmth, and overwhelming love, The Big Green Egg waits for you.

It's cheaper at Amazon.

I've heard good things about the Weber. I tend to like more traditional style (fire box & smoke chamber) smokers, but that's me.

Enjoy - it's a fantastic hobby that pays great dividends.

I have the WSM and I find it to be great. It looks like a black version of R2D2 and it's about the same size. I've done 4 whole chickens or 6 pork butts at the same time so there's plenty of space inside. The thing I like about it is its small footprint. That and the fact that I've done 20 hour smokes before and not had to worry about cleaning out the ash (as many designs will do but some won't).

As Jimmy says above, this is a great hobby. Highly addictive and often requested by friends and family.
