Lost
So we roll from a dice server every year to determine draft order. Unfortunately, 2 people have rolled the same number and they are, so far, in the running for 1st and 2nd pick. I figured rolling 4 1000 sided dice (throwing out the lowest) this wouldn't happen. Oh well, go figure. In my rule book, I don't have a rule for this. So I figure I have 2 options. 1. I can have them both re-roll and add their new rolls to the others to determine draft order (basically count their first roll as invalid), but I don't think it is fair to them, as it wasn't their fault. or 2. I can wait until everyone rolls, alert all the owners that we have a tie and have just the 2 teams with a tie re-roll for spots 1 and 2 (unless someone else rolls lower than them), but you get the idea. I am pretty sure option 2 is the right way to go and everyone should be happy. Thoughts? Other Idea?
alchico
Without a specific rule the only fair way is for the 2 that are tied to re-roll to break the tie. I think you'll find that this is what the majority do in this case.

irish
I re-roll is the thing to do here. However, afterward get a rule in place to break these ties such as whoever has the highest single dice gets the higher pick or whoever's first dice is higher gets the higher pick. Bronco Billy
This is why you'll see a lot of leagues use two rolls of the dice when they roll - they have a tiebreaker in place immediately. First roll for order, second roll in case of a tie. That said, both guys were good with their first rolls for the 1 & 2 spot - so you can't penalize them and make them re-roll to put them back in the draft order. It's a pretty simple solution to have them roll a tie-breaker between the two of them. Edited August 18, 2009 by Bronco Billy
Lost
Thanks guys, that is exactly what I was thinking. Good point Billy for the rule book for the future!
MustOfBeenDrunk
re-roll but only roll two dice ,, that way no one will complain if the totals they roll end up being the lowest not that it matters because they will only be rolling for the purpose of breaking the tie but it assures that you aren't opening a can of worms
