Internet Explorer question

So, I have my new computer loaded up ... except ...

The IE I was using allowed tabs to run across the top of the window (under the URL) so I could have 5-10 "tabs" open on a single window ... VERY efficient browsing.

Now, the new machine is requiring me to have a different window for each search going on. VERY inefficient.

How do I get back to the old set up with multiple tabs on a single window?

I really don't understand why people still run IE. Download Mozilla and be very happy about it.

So these days I'm rocking an old laptop with 512MB of RAM (upgrade coming in the mail soon)... and this thing turns into a brick when I launch Firefox. I can't seem to get the browser to stop taking up over 100MB of memory by itself.

I'm becoming a Google Chrome guy. It runs like a greased ferret. Right now... Chrome with 6 tabs open... 41MB. Sweet. Although it's java implementation is wonky, and logmein.com doesn't work in it. Other than that... top notch.

Well, I've got a youtube window open and I can click on:

IE 8

Google Chrome

Firefox 3.5

What say you?

...relatedly, once I finish moving my stuff from my old box to my new box, will I be able to bring over all of my favorites? I ask because I have several links to hard-to-find websites (i.e., they are not google friendly) that I would really hate to lose...

Well, I switched to Firefox 3.0.11 and was able to import all my favorites. I will probably upgrade at some point. I'm so glad I listened to fellow huddlers and made the switch. Runs so much faster for me and I haven't run into any problems. Lots of nice features you can add. I've got the ebay enhancement and a couple of security add-ons. The system I'm using is running vista and I've got 3gb of memory.

I'm an IE guy myself. FF is an implementation of Mozilla which is an extension of the old Netscape code. From a programmers standpoint, Mozilla never quite got it right.Your It guy is correct about Chome, but it will be good when everything is brought up to snuff. That being said, if I were you muck, I'd download both IE and FF, use both and stick with the one you like best.

FYI:

I received the following from a technology consultant guy who will be helping me out with some of this stuff:

"I like firefox as a browser, chrome has some security problems."

I'll probably go back to Firefox once I quadruple the RAM in this box, but for now to run lean and mean I'll just stay away from the goat porn and warez sites.

Firefox got bloated. Chrome is the new hotness.

Rgarding favs... there are a few ways to copy them. The easiest:

Nt sure what OS you have, but theyre all similar pretty much.

go to the C drive.

Go to Docs and Settings

Look for whatever account you use to login. Might be several, so if you use auto login, youll need to figure out what profile they are in.

Open the folder for said account, and look for the Favorites folder.

Copy that to a thumb drive and paste that same folder in thew same location on the new PC.

Feel free to PM me and I can help out if this makes no sense.

If you are still running IE6, here is a link to upgrade to IE8:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-...wide-sites.aspx

You posted that you can click on IE8, so not sure if you already have it or not.

If you do, you can just go to Tools > Internet Options > General > Tabs, and click on the box marked 'Enable tabbed browsing'

Cheers,

Kyler
