Beaumont
So I activated Windows Backup, did my initial backup, and each daily upadate is adding ~ 4-8g of data to my external hard drive. It will be full in one month. Should I be deleting the intervening backups between the initial backup and the last backup? Why is it filling the hard drive so fast? Thanks for the help. T_bone65
What settings do you have your backups set for? I am not familiar with Windows backup but do work with another backup S/W called Commvault for our servers here. I would assume you are doing differentials on a daily basis? Yep, and the differential files - if that is what you call it - are a bunch of gigs. So it catches up to the hard drive quick. I solved the problem by wiping out all the files and starting over. But I dont want to do that every 30 days. I am getting the feeling you cant delete intervening differential files?

If you are running differential or intermediate backups it should only be backing up what has changed since the last full backup. Have you done a complete backup yet? Most backup shcedules are weekly full and daily differential or intermediate. You would have to eventually erase the old backups though, after your next full backup. How much data do you have and how big is your HD? Edited December 9, 2009 by T_bone65

My data is about 50 gig. My external I am using now is 300 gig. I have a bunch of externals though. Now that I work for myself I have a sweet tooth for cheap technology. That is a good amount of data, I was going to suggest possibly going to a DAT drive and using tapes but that can get costly. After you do a full backup your dailys should get much smaller and use up much less space.
