Prayer Request - Family

Wife and I are expecting in September. For those that haven't been keeping track, she has 3, I have 3 (from previous marriages) and we have 1 together. This will be #8.

The past few weeks ultrasound findings have not been good. Baby is smaller than expected and there is not nearly enough amniotic fluid as expected. Original doctor and new specialist doctor both feel this is due to Multicystic Displastic Kidney on both kidneys, which leads to lungs not developing.

Bottom line, the expectation is that the baby is fine in the mother, but once delivered, will die very shortly (minutes or hours).

Pray for us, besides dealing with this we need to try to find a way for 7 kids (ages 4-17) to prepare for and understand this.

Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney

Sometimes MCDK will be seen on both sides (1 in 10,000 live births) or will be seen on one side with no kidney on the other side. Both of these conditions are lethal. Lethal means that the baby cannot survive after birth because there is no treatment to fix the problem. One of the biggest reasons that these conditions are lethal is because the urine made by the kidneys adds to the amniotic fluid. If there are no kidneys or the kidneys do not function and make amniotic fluid, the baby's lungs will not develop. The amniotic fluid is needed for the baby's lungs to grow and mature. However, as long as one kidney is working there should be an enough amniotic fluid for the lungs to grow and mature.

On the way man. Keep your chin up, our doctors were extremely about potential problems with our baby, even after spending a lot of money on subsequent tests.

Forgot to add. In regard to breaking the news to the kids, I think I would just be absolutely honest with them and pretty much lay it out the way you did here. Kids can smell BS a mile away. Not to belittle the grief of your kids, but your kids will probably take this a lot easier than you and your wife.

agreed. bring it all in ASAP, in my opinion. you guys don't need the stress of trying to figure out what to tell who when. and whatever the outcome, it just might bring your family that much closer together.

I'd add that you despite the affect this has on you & your wife to be sure to realize the affect this will have on your kids through you. Taking comfort in holding together as a complete family can go a long way in helping with this vs closing off from them.
