Root Canal

Recommended Posts

Well I expected this to really suck, but after more than a few novocaine shots it really wasn't all that bad.

My jaw is sore as hell now, but nothing a lot of advil doesn't fix.

My kids will now be brushing their teeth 4 times a day

I have been through root canals about 3-4 times and I have no idea why people compare them to other things as being the worst. Root canals are not bad at all. I would rather get a root canal than a tooth pulled, especially if the extraction is followed by a dry socket.

Root canals are even easier to go through if the roots aren't calcified and are easy to access. If people wait to long to get dental work and you need to go to a specialist to get to the apex of a root than it gets a bit more tricky as they have to go through the side of the gum. It's also important to look for a dentist who has updated technology and doesn't use as much hand filing.

Same here. I've had 2 or 3 and each time I basically fell asleep. I had the first one when I was around 12. Didn't bother me at all. I never could understand all the misery and hype people gave about having a root canal.

Like Irish said, they can be worse. And most who complain about how bad they are either had the more difficult ones, or they're just wimps.

I had one on a lower front tooth a number of years ago and it wasn't bad at all.

Same goes for having wisdom teeth pulled, it can be simple and relatively painless, or it can be a real nighmare.

I thought it would be more painful, my nerve was inflamed so I had to get several novocaine shots after we started as pain was still lancing through me during the drilling, once they got me real numbed up it wasn't bad at all

Today I have a bit of a jaw ache, but nothing bad at all

Next the post and crown!

The process for sounds like most of what everybody else had. Except, I had a dry socket. In my life, I've only had a shot of Demerol twice: once when I had kidney stones, and the other when I had a root canal dry socket. I was ready to pull an Edward Norton Fight Club and shoot myself in the face. Dry socket is no joke.

Both are a piece of cake. How many visits did you have to go through for them to file out your roots?

I have had 3 done. The procedure is nothing. The pain PRIOR to having it done it almost unbarable. The bill was the worst though.

No doubt about that! The crown alone is big bucks! But the pain I had before my first RC was the worst pain I've ever been in and I put off having the RC because I was afraid of how painful the procedure would be. I was so stupid as I dealt with so much more pain not getting it.

That's incredible as I need a minimum of 2-3 visits to file just the roots and each is about 60-90 min. Then come the visits for taking molds for the crown and crown install.

They told me it might take two visits but were able to do it in one.

I go back to my dentist for the crown stuff in 10 days or so

When I was about 7-8 years old, my face collided with a gymnasium floor (won't get into the details... not one of my prouder moments), and I chipped a tooth as a result. About 20 years later, that tooth, as well as others surrounding it, started to die. I've had 3-4 root canals, and as others have said, they're really not bad, as long as they're done correctly (and there are no complications).

The one exception to that, for me, was the first root canal that I had done... The doc started drilling before the novocaine had gone into full effect (and the nerve must have only been partially dead at that point). I practically jumped out of the chair... It felt as though someone had jammed a screwdriver up my nostril. Eyes started pouring tears, etc. The dentist simply said "Oh, sorry... Did you feel that?" I almost punched him.

 I obviously will never know what childbirth feels like but tooth pain is the worst I have ever known by far.

Most of them do. Similar to medical you screwed right off the bat if they're not an "in-plan" dentist. Second the insurance covers stuff at a crap rate, and still thinks things like old amalgam (a mercury alloy) should be used instead of more modern composites. (My dentist says he hasn't used amalgam for over 20 years). Any procedure I have done I expect to pay 50% of the cost, that even applies to some things like exams, cleaning and X-rays.

Of course insurance claims that all their practices are based on usual and customary fees and procedures. They just don't say from what decade or century
