Ryan Mathews

Recommended Posts

Yes, possibly a new normal for performance but his frame is still brittle. The underlying risk factor will always be there with Matthews. One good sneeze and there goes a collarbone again.

During the game last night, I recall a play in the first half where it was 3rd and 1. SD ran RM left, he was hit behind the line, spun, then got 2 yards for the 1st down. Why I recall this, was his immediate signal to the sideline to come out and Danny coming in for him.

I find that I do hold my breath quite a bit watching him play, and why I have a difficult time inserting him into my lineup on a regular basis. Having said that, I just see this as a possible example of the cliche about a "player coming into his own" after a few years. Injuries seem to be his bugaboo, like you said, though.

I was cautiously optimistic about Mathews going in to the season. I noticed he seemed to be running the ball well in the preseason, hitting the holes harder, and making better decisions. Still, the injury bug and past fumbling problems were a concern. Took a late round flyer on him as an RB2/RB3 and have been pleased. He's played in every game, improved as the season's progressed, and only had 2 fumbles (1 lost). The key is that the coaches are starting to show more confidence in him too. Early in the season, they would pull him in the redzone. However, lately, they've been giving him redzone opportunities and he is delivering. His 5 100-yard rushing games ranks up there w/ McCoy and ADP. He has some burst and decent speed and has broken off more long runs (20+ yards) than in season's past. Looks like he has turned the corner. Now, if he can just stay healthy and continue to hold on to the ball, we may have something here...
