Should we have pity on Kelvin Owner?

We have co commissioners in our league. Commissioner 1 kept Kelvin as his ninth rnd pick. our draft coming up Sunday. Commissioner 2 sent out a message about a half hour ago. It states that "The right thing to do" is give him his ninth round pick back. Let me also add that these 2 guys made us declare our keepers by July 31st. Opinions?

IMO your keeper shouldn't be locked in if you haven't drafted yet. Nothing wrong with making you guys choose your keepers early but if a guy goes out for the season like this I don't see the harm in letting him choose someone else. Now if you guys had already drafted than it would be a different story

In the past we've declared keepers one week before our draft, but if there was a major injury before we drafted we could change it. Anything after draft was set in stone. This year we aren't announcing keepers until the start of the draft to make it a little bit challenging.

Gray area.

How hardcore is the league - if you all are cutthroat and your rules specify that keepers were locked July 31st, then he still has Benjamin for his 9th rounder and can either hold him all year and maybe keep him next year or cut him, etc.

If you are friends and this is a good natured league, I would absolutely allow him to not keep Benjamin and get his pick back.

I just joined a league that a friend of mine runs with some of his other friends that I do not know - took over a team where Benjamin was the only viable keeper - and similar to Footballjoe and uofmfan, I am allowed to change my decision to keep Benjamin because of the injury - it's an allowance in their rules for the betterment/integrity of the league to help keep a level playing field.

Then again, those owners like the challenge of a level playing field and see no reason to saddle an owner with a player that got hurt before our draft.

This is exactly why we don't draft until all preseason games are over, also having to declare keepers early is bull. If you are anal enough to need people declare a week in advance you should be good enough to figure out who people are keeping.

What do your rules say? Do you get a do-over if there's an injury? Is there any league precedent for doing so? Bad rules are bad, but they are still rules. Stupid to declare keepers so early, stupider to change the rules the minute they don't suit a co-commish.
