League_Champion
I don't blame him. They are in the middle of negotiations and have made it clear that they want to resign him. Don't get hurt.
stevegrab
Holding out all season rarely works for the player, and it sounds like Thomas is prepared to do that. From the linked story, he wants $22M/yr, they offered $18M.

It doesn't seem like they are that far apart. They'll probably meet somewhere in the middle. They can't afford to lose him.

Over 20% difference doesn't seem like being that far apart to you? What are the other top WRs making, is it even close to $18M. If not and he wants another 20% on top of that, I'd call that far apart and serious.

Of course he wants 22 million, so do I. They'll settle at 20 and the Saints will be thrilled. The Saints window is closing with Brees. They need to win now. There's no way they don't pay Thomas, they have to. I'd be SHOCKED if this turns into a real holdout.
purplemonster
Yes they definitely need Thomas. I am not sure there is a more important receiver to his team than Thomas. Maybe there is but in terms of Super Bowl chances it's hard to think of anyone who makes more of a difference. Their Vegas odds would change a lot. stethant
I just want to know how a team can afford to spend $20 million a year on one WR with all the cap constraints. Some analytics fiend must have looked into this - can the price tag be justified?
DMD
Have to wonder too with Thomas - how long does Drew Brees (40 YO) play and what happens when he is gone? Thomas is obviously elite but what is he like with a new QB? He's cashing in now while his numbers are astronomic instead of potentially waiting for Brees to be gone. Thomas knows that they have no choice but to pay him, and they will. They are in a 2 year window right now. After that it's a total rebuild. League_Champion
Thomas and the Saints had agreed on a five-year $100 million extension with $61 million guaranteed. That’s the most guaranteed money for any non-quarterback offensive player in NFL history, Schefter said. With that, Drew Brees’ top target will be back with the Saints. Thomas’ extension goes through the 2024 season.
