Early Waiver Wire Targets

So ... what did we learn from Week 1?  Same as we learn every Week 1 (which is to say we should already know this) ... the NFL is unpredictable, especially in the transition from preseason to Week 1.  Are you ready to take advantage of the overreactions by your league mates?

I'm in a deep league (14-teams) so the guys on the waiver wire are much thinner than in most leagues, but there's a few guys who make me wonder if they're worth a bench stash.  What do you think?

Curtis Samuel - 11 targets, 8 receptions, 55 yards and a touchdown PLUS 4 rushing attempts for 17 yards.  Will the Commanders continue to use him this way? Samuel is an intriguing add for me, and given I have an open slot, someone perhaps worthy of targeting?

Devin Duvernay - 4 receptions on 4 targets, 54 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Duvernay is going to get picked up in pretty much every league he's not already owned, as people will instantly believe he'll be the WR1 instead of Bateman.  Maybe, but it's early.  I'd take a chance on him too, but I'm not sure if I'd make him my #1 pick up.

Dontrell Hillard - not much in the rushing game (2 carries for 8 yards) but 3 for 4 in receiving, 61 yards and 2 touchdowns.  This one is intriguing, but will it continue?  Like Duvernay, a worthwhile pickup, but I'm still giving deference to Samuel.  Your thoughts?

OJ Howard - 2 for 2, 38 yards and 2 TDs.  Another player who's fantasy points were solid because of dual touchdowns, but I'm pretty confident this is an outlier for Howard.  If I have room and I'm low in the waiver order, I might take a flier on him, but I'm not too eager to bite on this performance.

Taysom Hill - Mr. "I can play any position" caught his lone target for just 2 yards, but rushed for 81 yards on 4 attempts, scoring a TD in the process.  On ESPN, he's TE eligible only.  Will he continue to be used as he was in prior seasons, potentially having value in the position?  I don't see him taking many snaps at QB this year, but he's intriguing.  Yet, I feel this, like Howard, may be a red herring, and those that are quick to pick him up will find themselves with a disappointing performance next week against Tampa Bay.

Who else are you targeting?  How about injury-replacement guys like Wilson and Warren.  Seems like Warren might be the #1 to target over every one else especially given how the Steelers are likely to use him, but he's quite unproven compared to someone like Wilson who you know has the talent, but also has competition for touches.

How about guys your over-emotional leaguemates will cut?  I've seen rumblings about dumping guys like Kadaris Toney, Devonta Smith, Cole Kmet, Irv Smith, Cam Akers, James Cook, Isaiah Likely, George Pickens, David Njoku, Darnell Mooney, Allen Robinson, Josh Palmer, and, of course...Dameon Pierce.

Most of these guys (and lots of others that will get the axe) are worth holding another week, but who are you going to snag if someone drops him?  From the above list, I'd immediately go after Pickens, and strongly consider Likely, Mooney, Robinson, Palmer and Toney...and of course, Pierce--especially as my primary league is a keeper league.

What say you?

Hill as a TE could be occasional gold. I'm just aggravated that, once again, Kyle Pitts did almost nothing. He had a high target percentage, which is good, but how difficult is it to get the ball to your best offensive player?

Another hot name should be DeAndre Carter, who surprisingly filled in on much of Keenan Allen's targets. Josh Palmer was there, but Carter made much more noise. And now Keenan's getting an MRI on his hamstring, which could portend a longer time off the field.

Good add.
