WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Derrick Mason

Jaguars

Ravens

Bengals

Giants

Jets

49ers Mar. 1 - Mason, the top receiver on the free-agent market, has no shortage of teams lobbying for his services. According to The Florida Times-Union, Mason has narrowed his choices down to Jacksonville, Baltimore, Cincinnati and both New York teams.

The Jaguars might have the inside track because they recently hired Mason's position coach in Tennessee, Steve Walters. Mason, who was cut by the Titans on Feb. 21, had 191 catches and 15 touchdowns the past two seasons. Despite being slightly undersized at 5-11, Mason is considered a No. 1-caliber receiver.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Laveranues Coles

Redskins

Jets

Ravens

Bucs

Vikings Mar. 1 - A proposed trade that would send Coles to the Jets in exchange for WR Santana Moss might be back on, reports The Washington Times. The Jets backed away from the deal on Saturday morning when the representatives for Coles apprised New York officials that their client would likely want to upgrade his contract if traded.

However, the Jets appeared ready to talk again on Monday. "I would not kill it. I wouldn't say it's dead," a source told Newsday. "I would say it still has a pulse."

Several teams, including the Ravens, Vikings and Buccaneers, remain interested in Coles, The Washington Post reports.

Coles might be willing to forfeit a $5 million bonus payment due on April 1, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

WHO WHAT THE SKINNY

Samari Rolle

Chiefs

Redskins?

Cowboys? Mar. 1 - The Chiefs, looking for veteran help at cornerback, are expected to meet with Rolle on Wednesday, according to The Tennessean.

The Redskins were believed to be on the verge of signing Rolle, but the Washington Times is reporting that the team is cooling on Rolle because his price tag is too high.

Rolle, recently cut by the Titans, was an All-Pro in 2000. Rolle's 2004 season was cut short by a knee injury, but he's believed to be fully recovered.

The Cowboys have also expressed interest in Rolle.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Gerard Warren

Browns

Broncos Mar. 1 - The Broncos are aggressively pursuing Browns defensive lineman Gerard Warren, The Denver Post reports. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Warren, given permission to seek a trade, has been a disappointment in Cleveland.

According to The Post, it likely will cost the Broncos a high-round draft pick to acquire Warren. Denver has the 25th pick in the draft.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Jay Fiedler

Bears

Giants

Jets?

Browns? Mar. 1 - Fiedler's agent, Brian Levy, told The New York Post that the Giants and Bears are the frontrunners to land Fiedler. The Jets may also be interested, but they have yet to contact Levy.

The 33-year-old Fiedler, who was released by the Dolphins on Feb. 23, is considered a No. 2 QB at this stage of his career. His only chance to start might come in Cleveland, if the Browns don't retain Kelly Holcomb.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Seth Payne

Texans

? Mar. 1 - With no immediate plans for talks with the Texans, it appears that nose tackle Seth Payne will become an unrestricted free agent, The Houston Chronicle reports.

"I think what probably will happen is he will go into free agency and make a couple of visits," Payne's agent, Ralph Cindrich, told The Chronicle. "He really likes playing in Houston, and he likes the people there, but at the same time, once you get into free agency, anything can happen."

Payne, 30, is recovering from surgery to repair two hamstring tendons attached to his pelvis.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Jeff Garcia

Browns

Broncos

Buccaneers

Lions

Cardinals Feb. 28 - Despite coming to terms with Brian Griese on a new contract, the Bucs remain interested in Garcia. According to The St. Petersburg Times, the Bucs have offered Garcia a contract and Garcia, who has always been intrigued by the prospect of playing for Jon Gruden, is close to accepting it.

"Jeff is strongly considering Tampa Bay," agent Steve Baker said. "He met with Coach Gruden knowing that they had reached a deal with Brian Griese. I'd say there's a 50 percent chance he goes there."

Garcia, who was released by the Browns on Feb. 22, met with the Bucs, Lions and Broncos at the NFL combine. The Cardinals are also believed to be interested.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Brian Griese

Bucs

Buccaneers

Lions?

49ers? Feb. 28 - Brian Griese agreed to restructure his contract with the Buccaneers on Sunday, helping the team alleviate its salary-cap problems. The Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times reported the quarterback's deal is worth $32 million over five years.

"There is a long-term agreement, and it will be signed in the next few days," team spokesman Jeff Kamis said. Griese was in jeopardy of not returning because he was due a $6 million roster bonus on Wednesday. Redoing his contract will save the team more than $4 million under the salary cap.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Patrick Surtain

Dolphins

Chiefs Feb. 28 - The Chiefs are interested in Surtain, but the Dolphins must lower their demands before Kansas City will talk seriously about a trade.

"It's in the hands of Miami," Chiefs president Carl Peterson told The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "They're looking for a draft choice. And it's also in the hands of the agent, who's looking for a big contract. We've talked, but the number is too big.

"If it gets reasonable, then fine. The first part is do the dollars make sense? Now they're a little high."

Surtain, sensing the Dolphins may not be able to structure a long-term contract extension to keep him, asked to be traded last month. Surtain is entering the final year of a contract that pays him $6.15 million in 2005 and has a cap number of $8.383 million.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Orlando Pace

Rams

Giants? Feb. 28 - Rams coach Mike Martz told The New York Daily News he has no intention of trading Pace, even though the Rams called the Giants last week to gauge their interest in the Pro Bowl left tackle. Pace, the Rams' franchise player, is slated to make $8.4 million in 2005. Any team interested in Pace would likely want to negotiate a long-term deal before making a trade.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Trevor Pryce

Broncos

? Feb. 28 - The Broncos have decided to shop Pryce, and as many as 10 teams are interested in acquiring the Pro Bowl DE, reports Pro Football Weekly. However, after the first week of free agency, the number of potential suitors could drop significantly.

Salary-cap concerns (Pryce has a cap number of $9.16 million for '05) and age (Pryce turns 30 in August) are among the leading factors in to Denver's decision. The team also plans to switch to the 3-4 defense in 2005, and Pryce is better suited for the 4-3 alignment.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

LaMont Jordan

Jets

Jets

Raiders

Buccaneers Feb. 28 - With the Jets having used their franchise tag on DE John Abraham, Jordan is expected to hit free agency with a number of suitors lined up. According to the N.Y. Times, the Raiders already have approached the Jets about trading for Jordan but now can wait and attempt to sign him after March 2.

The Buccaneers are looking for a dependable back, and Pro Football Weekly reports that Jordan is the hot name floating around One Buc Place. Tampa recently hired former Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who is more than familiar with Jordan's abilities, both as a runner and a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

The Jets still will attempt to re-sign Jordan, but he reportedly wants a significant raise and more carries. "If I do decide to come back here," Jordan told the N.Y. Daily News, "it's because they presented me with an offer that I feel comfortable with, and because I seriously feel like I have a legitimate chance of starting."

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Kurt Warner

Giants

Bears

Cardinals Feb. 28 - Looking for a veteran to challenge QB Josh McCown, the Cardinals are interested in signing Warner, reports the East Valley Tribune.

Warner, who will become a free agent on March 2, is looking for a team that will name him the starter from the outset, much like the Cowboys did with Drew Bledsoe. Although the Bears have Rex Grossman penciled in as their starter, they are willing to give Warner a chance to compete, according to The Chicago Tribune.

"There's no difference between the Kurt Warner who was in St. Louis, he just needs the pieces around him," Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told The Tribune. "When he had time to throw last year, he won."

Other teams looking to add quarterback depth include Cleveland, San Francisco, Miami, Detroit, Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Travis Henry

Bills

Cardinals

Feb. 28 - Even though the Bills have given the Cardinals permission to arrange for Henry to visit, a trade between the two teams doesn't appear imminent, according to The Arizona Republic.

"We haven't had any talks beyond that," Buffalo president and GM told the paper.

It was previously reported that the Bills are working on a trade that would send Henry to Arizona in exchange for offensive tackle L.J. Shelton, who visited Buffalo and took a physical. However, because Henry has only one year left on his contract, the Cardinals would like to have him signed long term before pulling the trigger on a trade.

Another hurdle could be Cardinals coach Dennis Green, who has always preferred speed over power backs. Henry might not be well-suited for the style of offense Green wants to implement.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

L.J. Shelton

Cardinals

Bills

Rams?

Buccaneers?

Bears? Feb. 28 - The Cardinals have granted Shelton permission to seek a trade, and the left tackle has high value now that Walter Jones has signed a new contract with the Seahawks.

Shelton's most likely suitor appears to be Buffalo, but the Cardinals might be backing away from a proposed Shelton-for-Travis Henry swap because Henry has only one year left on his contract.

Shelton recently visited Buffalo and underwent a physical. The Rams, Bucs and Bears are also reportedly interested in Shelton.

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

Rod Gardner

Redskins

Buccaneers

Ravens

Vikings

Chargers Feb. 28 - Laveranues Coles isn't the only Redskins receiver on the trading block. The Washington Times is reporting that team is also trying to move Gardner. Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Minnesota and San Diego appear to be the teams most interested. The Redskins probably will trade him for a middle-round draft choice.

I've been saying since November that I would LOVE Jay Fiedler on the Giants. He's a local guy, and he's the perfect backup. He's a real smart guy (Ivy League), he knows how to win in this league, and he can teach Eli a lot. And if Eli goes down, I'm completely comfortable having Fiedler step in.

Hadn't heard Mason to the Giants.. but that would be great. We need a WR BAD and with Porter and Muhammed off the market, Mason is the best left. That would rule...

Pace to the Giants would also be killer.. this could be a good offseason.

Thanks for posting. some good info there. Looks like maybe Henry to the cards and jordan to oakland are not the locks some people are making them out to be. also interesting that the Bucs are looking to possibly go with Griese and Garcia, and are looking to ditch Simms.

What happen to Sims? Never thought much of him but it didn't seem like he was even been given a shot.

They gave him one (maybe 2) start and he got hurt pretty much right away, twisted his knee I think. After Johnson got benched, they went to Simms first - not Griese. But then went Simms got hurt, Griese came in and was awesome, so when Simms got healthy he only saw some garbage time after that.

Maybe he got stuck in the same room with his Dad for a few hours, and shot himself in the leg to get out.

Now that is funny. Thinking about Phil Simms always reminds me of the time he was hit with a snowball while commenting on a game. Don't have a link, but that is hilarious.
