Primetime9287
I found this interesting since I didn't even realize he had any contract disputes. The link is below. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/charg...9-no-gates.html
skylive5
Heh heh.... sure he does. They offered him a 1 year contract for 380,000. He was not amused.
Swampnuts
I'm surprised he waited this long to announce the holdout. I didn't expect one of the top 2 players at his position to actually play for that salary. I doubt the Chargers did either. The cash is soon to follow. piratesownninjas
He said over the summer that he was unhappy about his contract, but that he would still report on time, and handle things properly. All of us on the board were praising him and talking trash about Walker and TO... They both report on time, and Gates is a no show... Maybe we were wrong. Swampnuts
He probably thought if he said and did all the "right things" the Chargers would take care of him before camp. Guess he was wrong. They did the smart thing and wrapped up LT for a long term deal. Gates proved he is the real thing, shouldn't they do the same with him? Primetime9287
I just wonder how much his production is going to decrease this year. He kind of just came out of nowhere and caught everyone (and everything) by surprise. I'm curious to see if D's will be able to adjust better to him this year or if he will be another rare breed like Tony Gonzo, basically being unstoppable. I gotta see another full year of dominance from a guy that never played college ball to believe he is the real deal. I wish him the best though. Take some pressure off of LT2. At least he didn't take the hardball approach (of course, he isn't tied to Rosenblouse) ... but still disappointed he isn't in camp.

He had more yards on less catches than Gonzo did in each of their rookies years and they both had 2 td's. However, their second years are no comparison. Having LT certainly helps out, and while Gonzo didn't have a stud RB his 2nd year you can't exactly say that the last few years anyway. I think having some other receiving options will open up SD's offense more this year and Gates will have still a large role, but may not see as much action his way. However, I still think he will be a force to reckon with. I think the first few games the D's will try to key on him some, but either LT or the improved "chemistry" with the WR's should take care of that. Stats-wise I say Gonzo has a better year...but barely.
kraftykraft
I think that Gonzo is the better bet, because he has done it for several years in a row now. I am surprised that the Chargers didn't try to improve Gates contract though. It's one thing to be TO, get a big contract with the Eagles, and then lady dog for an even bigger one a year later. It's another to get paid $380,000 after a record-setting Pro Bowl season, especially when the other big guns in the offense (LT and Brees) got big money to play this season.... That borders on disrespecting Antonio Gates, and quite possibly crosses the line...
Chargerz
For all you present and future Gate owners out there: "The deal will get done, guys, never fear!" On the local news it was reported that both sides are close to working out a deal. The negotiations have not been contentious. The Chargers know he should have a better contract. It's just working out the specifics. Now this Merriman guy, on the other hand...... Edited July 30, 2005 by Chargerz

rattsass
I'm sold on Gates. It's not like he was sneaking up on anybody by the end of last season. Everybody knew what he was doing, and they just couldn't stop him. The management will cough up the money, his agent will buy a Ferrari and all will be well.
