rocknrobn26
I bought a 2.5" enclosure to use a HD from an old laptop. It's cable has 2 male USB connections, and a third male connection on a short lead. WTH is that for??? Anyone......?????
Azazello1313
I've seen those too and never really bothered to figure it out. if I had to guess I'd think maybe it has something to do with putting the second plug into the PC as a dedicated power conduit allowing the other one to dedicate to data. but really I have no idea. I thought of that, sorta like a USB powered DVD drive. But what advantage would that have? I also thought it might be to daisy chain 2 drives together, but most of the comm'l ext. drives have the "trapazoidal" connection not a rectangular one. Anyone else? xlence
If I'm not mistaken the Y cable has one plug for data and power and the other is power only. This is for the USB ports that don't deliver enough juice. Just plug the power only cable into another USB port. I have an Iomega ext. HD with the same cable and this is the explanation I got. rocknrobn26
That must be it. SATA drives I believe pull more more, so they need 2 inputs. Thanks Az/Xl. Appreciate it! Edited January 5, 2009 by rocknrobn26
