BeeR
I have about a 3 yr old HD (PC is no more) I want to get data off of and not interested in paying some PC shop to get it. Heard about these and wondering how they work (and how reliably) - here's an example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...&CatId=2785 Is it just "plug n play" from this to a PC or-? If so does Windows auto-detect and that's it, ie like a jump stick (as it seems to imply)? Thx

Thx Unless you have several drives the same or different sizes,I have used a variety (not this brand) of enclosures for 3.5" and 2.5" drives w/ no problems. And yes, once assembled they act like a portable hard drive, plug it in, but you need to release it w/ the "Safe to remove" icon in the notification bar. FishyCommish
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812101003 I have the adaptor above and have used it successfully for a year or so to access old drives without opening up the case and going through the whole IDE connection process. You just hook up the power cable and IDE or SATA cable to the drive. It acts just like you attached a usb drive and as you say "auto-detects" the drive. Pretty inexpensive and easy to use. I never used the SATA capabilities, so I can't really speak on that. If you aren't familiar, I highly recommend Newegg also.
kpholmes
I have to agree with RR that enclosures are the way to go. Essentially turns your hard drive into an external. I find value in being able to physically protect a drive in casing.
