Interesting article. I'm thinking that I first heard about it as part of the 1993 outbreak of the hoax. This was back before everyone was on-line (at least everyone that I knew). The ability for this hoax to gain that much traction back then still amazes me.

 

IMO, the web kind of cheapened the whole urban legend thing. They were much more interesting back when they would spread like wild fire mostly by word of mouth.
