In your family/circle of friends, is giving money crass/unacceptable?

My kids actually started asking me for cash or visa gift cards a few years ago. Takes the fun out of shopping a bit but actually, it lessens the headache. My son is in college so thats a practical gift and my daughter is a teen shopping fanatic. Win win for both parties IMO.
