Tom O'Brien to NC State?

Not sure why this is a good move for him unless it's a significant pay raise? Or the fact that he'll pick up a much better fan base, I suppose. BC has been good for quite a while now and graduation rate is one of the best in the country but Boston will always be a pro sports town from a fans perspective.

He wasn't making all that much at BC considering the run he'd had there. There was some whiny jerk in the Raleigh paper this morning talking about how uncool it was for NC St. to hire a coach from another ACC school but if BC wanted him, they needed to upgrade the contract. A quick search showed he made half as much as the guy at Kansas and even less than the guy at Texas Christian. If NC State just pays him the D-1 average it will be almost a 33% raise.

Tell you what though, I wouldn't wish the NC State fan base on anyone. They've got an inferiority complex rivaled by nobody and unreal expectations. Herb Sendek took that program over when it was in shambles and took them to 5 straight NCAA tourneys (one of only about 6-10 schools to do that during that stretch) but the fans basically ran him off because he didn't win often enough against Roy Williams and Coach K. Think about how many guys would be out of a job if that was the standard. His kids were being heckled at school, etc.

Mind you, Amato needed to go and what NC State needs more than anything else is discipline. From what I understand, O'Brian is good at that.

BC seems to be alot better job than NC State from the outside looking in.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. At least in football, NC State doesn't have to be looking up at UNC and Duke so there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to succeed. Part of Amato getting fired likely had to do with dropping 3 straight to UNC but, unlike in hoops, NC St. had better teams every year.

There's talent there as is evidenced by some of the latest NFL drafts. Additionally, the south is way more into college ball than Boston. I mention the rabid fans who'll turn on you in a second but if he can win...

O'Brien was likely never going to accomplish any more than he'd already done at BC. I mean, is there any precedent what so ever for a team from the Northeast doing anything at all on the national picture? There might not be enough in-state talent for both UNC and NC St. to become national powers but one of them should be able to.

Butch Davis vs. Tom O'Brien... the race is on.

Word locally is that it's a combo of making more money and a frustration with consistently getting passed over by upper level bowls because the school and its fans have gotten the reputation for not packing the bowl game. In the last two years BC has gone to the bowl typically reserved for 6th and 5th place finishers in the ACC, respectively, but both years they finished 3rd. Both Clemson and Maryland are participating in higher bowls than BC this year even though they had the same record and BC beat them both. That has to be frustrating for him.

As for what he brings to NC State...discipline will definitely improve. Graduation rate will probably get better as well. His teams have consistently over performed. They are never loaded but he gets the most out of the kids. Funny thing is, every year there is at least one or two games where BC completely blows up against a team they should easily beat and costs themselves a chance to be elite. Two years they would have won the Big East but they lost their last game to lowly Syracuse. This year they give up the Hail Mary to NC State and then lose to a very down Miami team with a chance to go to the ACC Championship on the line (if Wake lost). Not sure if that is on the coach or not. I guess we'll see.

  • 4 weeks later...

O'Brien said the energy in the stands when NC State beat BC was some of the best he'd ever seen-anywhere, and it can get very loud in Carter Finely-that's one reason.

The ability to recruit in state with the facilities NC State has(the Wendell Murphy Football Center is one of the finest in the entire nation), also Virginia, Tenn, SC just a border away and Ga and Fla not far either.

Another was quite simply...the state of North Carolina, as the man evidently loves this region.

Plus, it's an in state supported school oppossed to BC ( not sure the signifigance?)
