Thomas suffered the injury during 1-on-1 pass-rushing drills Wednesday, and he had surgery Thursday morning. There is a strong possibility that Thomas could be placed on injured reserve at some point, ending his 2008 season, which also means this could be a career-threatening injury for the 13th-year veteran. Thomas, 34, was running with the second-team defense at a very crowded tackle position. If the Saints don't want to place him on IR, they will have to use up a roster spot to hang onto him, hoping he can come back and contribute in October. With Thomas out, veteran Kendrick Clancy appears to be the first-team nose tackle. Rookie Sedrick Ellis, who has been lining up as the first-string three-technique tackle, can also switch over to the nose position. Veterans Brian Young and Antwan Lake are primarily three-technique guys, but they are versatile enough to mix and match. And the Saints also like what they have seen this summer from young tackle Orien Harris. "He worked very hard to get his weight down. He was very good in a role that relied on experience. He was having a fantastic camp. So it was just unfortunate that it happened," Saints defensive line coach Ed Orgeron said of Thomas, who made his reporting weight for the first time in three years with the Saints this summer. That weight was undisclosed, though Thomas is listed at 335 pounds and it was thought to be in that range.
