Colts re-sign Joseph Addai

It was a busy Saturday of comings and goings with the Indianapolis Colts.

Coming back: free agent running back Joseph Addai.

Going: suddenly-free agent cornerback Kelvin Hayden.

"We still have a lot of work to do," said team owner Jim Irsay, who nonetheless was upbeat after signing off on quarterback Peyton Manning's new five-year, $90 million contract.

Manning agreed to accept less than the Colts were initially offering in part because he hoped the savings would be used to re-sign a player such as Addai. "Joe is a priority," Manning told The Indianapolis Star on Friday.

Addai has been the team's top running back -- and a top-notch pass protector -- since he was selected with the 30th overall pick in the 2006 draft. In five seasons, he has rushed for 4,020 yards, eighth-best in club history. Addai was limited to a career-low 495 yards last season when he missed eight games with nerve damage in his left shoulder.

Hayden, meanwhile, was a cap casualty. The 2005 second-round draft pick was due to count $9.055 million against the league's $120.3 million salary cap. That included a $6.105 million base salary.

However, releasing Hayden only frees about $1 million in cap space. The team still must count approximately $8.1 million in so-called "dead money," prorated bonuses that have yet to be applied against the cap.

Hayden started 46 regular-season games in six seasons. Injuries limited him to 11 starts last season and eight in 2009. He produced the biggest play in the Colts' biggest win, intercepting a fourth-quarter pass by Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman and returning it 56 yards for a touchdown that sealed the Colts' 29-17 win over the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
