keggerz
I have data for every game played all the way back to 1985 and was doing some digging around and thought I would share some of my findings. Unfortunately the 80's will be from 85-89 Here are the raw stats: Rushing Attempts/Game/Team 85-89:30.26 90-99:27.89 00-09:27.77 10-11:27.08 Passing Attempts/Game/Team 85-89:32.06 90-99:32.50 00-09:32.69 10-11:33.79 Pass Completions/Game/Team 85-89:17.62 90-99:18.61 00-09:19.53 10-11:20.55 Sacks Given Up/Game/Team 85-89:2.58 90-99:2.37 00-09:2.25 10-11:2.25 We all know that the league is a "Passing" league now...just last week a record was set for most passing yards in a single week with 7,842 net passing yards. What the stats show us...Rushing attempts have gone down in each decade. Passing Attempts and Completions have gone up each decade Sacks have decreased each decade. Those are things that I think we all pretty much expected but with how "pass happy" the NFL is now I think it is a bit interesting to see what the differences are from the 80s to today (today being 2010 & 2011): 3.18 fewer rushes/game/team today vs then 1.73 more pass attempts/game/team today vs then 2.93 more pass completions/game/team today vs then 0.33 fewer sacks/game/team today vs then I bet it is hard to believe that on average teams are running the ball just 3 times less per game than they did in the 80s and even harder to believe that they are only throwing the ball less than 2 more times than they did. I don't think it is as shocking that the completion % has gone up but I bet most would be shocked to see we are only completing fewer than 3 more passes today versus then. Pip's Invitation
I bet you'd find a bigger difference if you grouped all the post-2003 years together. After the 2003 season, the league cracked down on illegal contact and such, and passing became a much less risky proposition.
