hereiamagain
I'm in a standard PPR league where we start two running backs. I was wondering what people think about starting between Kevin Smith and Cedric Benson. Benson is playing against Denver and Kevin Smith is against NO. I also have Mcfadden available but I feel like he's definitely out this week.
MTSuper7
Kevin Smith is going to be utilized like SJax was in STL the year he had 90 catches and a boatload of all purpose yds and scores. I know Denver was awful stopping the run last year, but Kevin Smith is the safer play, and New Orleans' defense doesn't really scare anyone. The Bengals have too many other weapons (Ocho, Coles, Henry). The Lions have Calvin Johnson. The Lions also have a rookie QB that will probably check down to Kevin Smith quite a bit. Benson's involvement in the passing game probably won't be substantial.
mojo chiefs
I do like Kevin Smith and had him last year on a league but I think I would go with Benson here. He's playing Denver, nough said.. I am afraid the D will key in on the run since Detroit will be starting the rookie QB. Palmer should be airing it out and give Benson some room to run. I think he's a different player this year... fingers crossed I have him on a couple of leagues. see my post

They're installing the 3-4 for this season, and it's really hard to gauge defenses before the season like this when there are major scheme, coaching, and/or personnel changes. Granted, Denver's D isn't likely to be top 10, but it's too much of an unknown to rely upon as a "given" that they'll suck completely. As for the Saints' D keying on the run, Stafford and Calvin Johnson already have a nice rapport. Stafford isn't afraid to air it out for Megatron, plus what I said about Kevin Smith getting a lot of catches would still apply anyway. Im just nervous that they'll fall behind in Detroit and that he won't be able to run at all. I still really can't decide.

That's a good point I suppose. I've given my rationale. Detroit will have to throw if they fall way behind, but Kevin Smith could get a lot of those check downs. I mean, SJax has been on a crappy Rams team for a few years now, but he still gets his when he's healthy (not that it's the exact same situation, but still). When I think of total touches and opportunities, I just favor Kevin Smith a little bit. But it's kind of close.
