Footballjoe
By Dex McLuskey June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who led the Bruins to 10 national titles in 12 years, is gravely ill in a California hospital, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 99-year-old Wooden is being treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, the Times said, citing school sources it didn’t identify because they’re not authorized to speak publicly. Wooden was briefly hospitalized about a month ago, the Times said. According to Los Angeles television station KCAL, he hasn’t eaten for the past few days. Nicknamed “The Wizard of Westwood,” Wooden had a 620-147 record in 27 years at UCLA. He coached the men’s team to 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association championships from 1964-75, including seven straight. During that time, the Bruins won a record 88 consecutive games overall and 38 straight in the NCAA tournament.
