BeeR
Modem is starting to act up and is older than dirt anyway. Near as I can tell the diff I would notice between the cheapest and the most expensive is slim to none as my cable service is also a limiting factor and I don't do online gaming, but that is based on admittedly limited research so far. Any general info, experiences etc appreciated...
tazinib1
Why are you buying a modem if you have cable internet? They should provide it for you...unless you are talking about a router.

Many providers allow/encourage you to provide your own modem and offer a discount if you do.

rocknrobn26
Frankly I'll pay them they're sheckles to rent the modem. It's one less excuse for them to use when things get f'd up. Yeah, it's costly, but when using their equipment they can't blame it on YOUR modem being bad and fixes usually come quickly.
BeeR
Apparently most agree. Anyway FWIW I did some research and the Motorola 5101 looks like it suits my needs - good price (~$50), modems have a good rep, plenty nice/fast/whatever enough.
