myhousekey
Good game by Va Tech. A&M is still about 2 years off from being a contender. Question though, what is the reasoning behind the rule that a team can't advance a fumble on a punt when the returner calls a fair catch and drops the ball? myhousekey
So far the only explanation I've heard is that it was a muff and not a fumble and you can't advance a muff (same rule in NFL?). Still can't find anyone to explain the reason behind the rule though.
Kansas State 2000
I missed the play, what happened with the punt?
myhousekey
Late in the 1st half the Aggies punted to Va Tech. The punt was very high and at its peak it got caught up in all of the wind and rain and started falling straight down. The Va Tech returner was signaling fair catch but had to start running up to make the catch. The ball continued to die (almost blowing backwards) and the returner botched the catch and the ball came out. An Aggie immediately picked it up and in stride took it to the house, for what I thought was 6 points. The referees ruled that you could not advance a fumble on a fair catch and thus the Aggies got the ball where they recovered it. Aggies went on to score anyways to make it 14-12 just before halftime (failed 2 point conversion).
