Packers horrible D

The Packers MUST change coordinators on D....here is a list of possible replacements:

If - and it’s still a big if - Mike Sherman decides to make a change at defensive coordinator for the second consecutive year, we asked a regional scout for another team to name some potential replacements for Bob Slowik. Here are his top choices:

Eric Mangini (defensive backs/Patriots) - "You can’t get Bill Belichick and you probably can’t get Romeo Crennel, so Mangini is the next best thing. Young (34), energetic and brings with him instant credibility. The fact that he’s taught both the 4-3 and the 3-4 in New England is an added bonus. The defensive players in Green Bay lost faith in Ed Donatell and never had much faith in Slowik. They would buy into Mangini right away."

Jim Bates (interim head coach/Dolphins) - "An older guy (58) who reminds you a little of Fritz Shurmer. Probably not as creative as Shurmer, but he’s a good teacher who stresses fundamentals. The defensive players in Miami love him. Got rid of Antuan Edwards in about two months, so he knows a stiff when he sees one."

Greg Blache (co-defensive coordinator/Redskins) - "Forget the title, Gregg Williams runs the defense in Washington. Blache has ties to Green Bay and did a good job in Chicago under Dick Jauron. The fact that his teams haven’t been very successful might hurt him, but that was mostly due to problems on the other side of the ball. If available, he’d be a great hire. Always popular with his players."

Ken Flajole (linebackers/Panthers) - "Another guy with ties to the Packers. Worked with Mike Sherman in both Green Bay and Seattle as part of Mike Holmgren's staff. Has done a good job in Carolina under John Fox. Was a 'candidate' to replace Ed Donatell a year ago, but that was Slowik's job from day one."

Rod Perry (defensive backs/Panthers) - "One of the best secondary coaches in the NFL. Young cornerbacks Chris Gamble and Ricky Manning have really blossomed under his tutelage. Flajole would probably get the nod over Perry because of his previous relationship with Sherman, but I’d choose this guy. Would also make an immediate difference with Ahmad Carroll and Joey Thomas."

Dave Campo (defensive coordinator/Browns) - "Didn’t win as the head coach in Dallas and his two seasons as coordinator in Cleveland were nothing to brag about. Wouldn’t be one of my top choices, but the Packers could do worse. And they have."

Johnnie Lynn (defensive backs/Ravens) - "Forges strong relationships with his players. Has coordinator experience with the Giants and spent this season in Baltimore. Was highly regarded until the Giants fell apart under Jim Fassel in 2003."

Rod Marinelli (defensive line/Bucs) - "Teams have been after this guy for a number of years, but Tampa Bay won’t let him go. Does a great job with the defensive line. Linebackers coach Joe Barry is another good candidate from that coaching staff. Both guys would bring Monte Kiffin's vaunted Cover-2 to Green Bay."

Steve Shafer (assistant head coach/Jaguars) - "Has tons of experience and is very sound in Xs and Os. Covets physical players, so he’d probably cringe at the current defensive personnel in Green Bay. His age (64) might be an issue for the Packers."

Dave McGinnis (linebackers/Titans) - "Built his reputation as a defensive coach with the Bears, but that was a long time ago. Another faux candidate to replace Donatell last year. Good communicator who usually gets his guys to play very hard."
