Peter Warrick got his wish.

The Bengals terminated the contract of the sixth-year wide receiver this morning. He is now a free agent.

The Bengals also waived rookie free agent Kyle Takavitz, a former University of Cincinnati player, and cornerback Terrell Roberts.

Coach Marvin Lewis said the termination of Warrick’s contract was a difficult one.

“There is some disappointment involved in making this move,” Lewis said in a statement. “But I believe it’s in the best interest of the Bengals and Peter to go forward.”

The Bengals roster now stands at 67.

Warrick was the Bengals’ first-round draft pick in 2000 and the fourth overall. From 2000-2004, he played in 66 games with 55 starts. He had 264 receptions for 2,811 yards and 18 touchdowns.

After practice on Monday, Warrick said if the team was going to release him he hoped it would be today.

He suffered knee and shin injuries in the past two seasons and was limited to four games in 2004.

The Warrick speculation grew in the past several months. He returned to practice on Aug. 14 for the first time since going on the injured reserve list in November. He practiced that week and played in the second preseason game at Washington.

But he missed all practices last week.

Warrick was due a $2.28 million base salary that would count against the Bengals' salary cap. Warrick’s total salary cap value was $3.69 million, which included the remaining portion of his $8.47 million signing from 2000.

The Bengals do not pay the salary.

It was clear, prior to the release, that Warrick no longer fit into the Bengals’ plans. He missed 12 games in 2004. They signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a four-year, $13 million contract in the offseason. Then they used their third- and sixth-round picks on wide receivers Chris Henry and Tab Perry.

It’s likely, too, that the Bengals didn’t want to spend $2.28 million on a wide receiver who is their fourth or fifth option or whom they think could get hurt again.
