Like most leagues, we have a 24-48 hr trade approval period, so that shady trades or cheating can be prevented. This year we've had a few trades get approved after a little less than 24 hrs, but only b/c they were vanilla or had been discussed on the chat board. The commish has the power to push thru a trade. Here's the scenario, last night the commish made a rather lopsided trade with another member of the league. The trade occured after midnight and was approved before anyone in our league got on the computer this morning. Other managers started questioning the trade and why the guy would trade his top 2 picks to the commish for pretty midlevel talent. The guy then admited that he was drunk last night and he thought he had rejected, not accepted the trade. If the trade hadn't been pushed thru so quickly by the commish, it probably would've been rejected when all the league members figured out what had happened. What do we do now? Our league uses the grace period to dispute trades, not approve. Trades don't have to be approved to be pushed thru, but the league rules state a 24-48hr grace period should apply to all trades. That's a BS move on your commish's part and it sounds like he pushed it through because he knew it was lopsided to his own personal advantage and abused his commish authority big time. That's cheating in my book and he does not deserve the trust/confidence which was bestowed upon him. MonkeyOne Posted October 14, 2009 Share Posted October 14, 2009 Your rules state there needs to be a minimum of 24 hours before a trade can be put through, but you're saying the Commish put his own trade through sooner. CrazyOne Posted October 16, 2009 Share Posted October 16, 2009 It's BS if the rules state a waiting period as you say. Try to find a better league next year, or a better commish anyway. It's one thing to propose a trade as a joke, quite another to push it through as commish, even if it was within the rules. If the guy says he thought he pressed reject, I think on a trade like that you give the benefit of the doubt given the instantaneous nature of the web-based league management in use these days. While it helps to try to cover various scenarios in the rules, I would expect people to also adhere to the spirit of the rules, not try to get ahead on some technicality or mistake. When the person attempting that is actually the commish, it does not bode well for the league as a whole, methinks. IMO, you either have a rule or you don't and it looks like you don't really have a rule, just a general understanding that can be ignored by the commish if he chooses. The rules should be explicit - immediate execution, 24 hours, 48 hours, whatever - then adhere to the rules. Either way it wasn't collusion, just somebody making a bad move. Many people here seem to believe, and I agree, that trades should only be reversed if there's collusion.What do we do now?Decide on a rule and follow it. FWIW - I think the commish should always strive to make the game fair for everyone and above all, always make sure that his own transactions are completely above reproach.
