You may have to pay tax on the income from "whatever source derived," which can be derived from labor. Example: you don't pay tax if you go chop a cord of word for yourself in your back yard. But you may have to pay taxes on the gross income derived from chopping wood for others, assuming they pay you. 16th amendment says congress can collect income taxes Based on the constitutional authority of the 16th amendment, Congress passed title 26, which encompasses the federal laws we commonly know as the internal revenue code. The internal revenue code proscribes a complex system of determining one's tax liability. While the Code does NOT specifically require anyone to file a tax return, it does impose deadlines for timely-filed returns. In addition, there are interest and penalties associated with failure to file file a return, underpayment, or non-payment of taxes. I spend every day at work doing battle with the IRS. But these tax protester types are delusional. Don't pay your taxes and see what happens: they'll seize your property and everyone who has tried to fight the seizure under these types of arguments has lost.
