Bellevue Murder Case Results in Change of Law

A murder and dismemberment of a man's body six years ago in Bellevue has resulted in a new state law that will make it a felony to cut up or hide a body to conceal a crime.

 

The new law takes effect July First.

 

It's the result of the 2001 slaying of Greg May.

 

Authorities say May's roommates Douglas DeBruin and Julie Miller cut up his body, threw the parts in the Mississippi River and buried the head in a bucket of concrete.

 

DeBruin was convicted of killing May and is serving a life prison sentence. Miller, however, who admitted to helping DeBruin cut up May's body, was only held responsible for lying to authorities and taking some of May's belongings.

 

She'll be out of prison in a few years.

 

May's family say they were shocked to learn there was no law in Iowa to prohibit what happened to their father's body.

 

They're happy Iowa will soon have a law that makes it a felony for someone to help cut up and dispose of a body to hide a crime.

Woman Faces 3 Years in Jail in Toilet Paper Theft

A Marshalltown woman accused of stealing toilet paper from the Marshall County Courthouse could find herself behind bars.

 

Police Chief Lon Walker says 38-year-old Suzanne Butts was caught last week after a courthouse employee saw her taking three rolls of tissue from a storage closet.

 

Walker says Butts has prior theft convictions and could face up to three years in prison if convicted of the new fifth-degree theft charge.

 

The chief says Butts doesn't work at the courthouse, and he doesn't know why she was there.
